1998 nissan maxima ignition troubles

You are describing a couple different issues, First off you should never see smoke come from your ignition. You say you replaced it but if you did and this was after it "smoked" then you may have had more damage than just the ignition.
The click you are hearing sounds like the starter trying to engage, but the armature is stuck. Try a light couple of taps with a hammer directly on the starter. If the car starts... then you need to replace the starter. Keep in mind you may have to have someone hold the key in the "start" position while you tap it. Make sure the emergency brake is on and the wheels are chaulked.

Key is stuck in ignition and will not turn to off. Pulling battery cables off did not work , car continued to run. Tried pulling off center spark wire for cable car continued to run. Tried the release...

since it is stuck in the on position you should be able to change the ignition lock with the key in. it is not very expensive and fairly easy to do. you should be able to purchase at just about any auto parts store.

Won't start, makes click sound when key is turned. Lights work, new battery in october.

hi this will be the starter motor, to test it, locate the starter motor, using either a long bar, or a tool that you can tap it with, tap the starter a few times, at the same time have someone turning the key in the ignition to run while you do this, it might just be stuck, if it turns over successfully after this a few times, it was a stuck solenoid and the starter may need changing but if it does not, the starter itself is u/s and needs changing anyway...hope this helps, just a bit of advise, when doing the above, make sure you are not near any moving parts when/if it starts up you could hurt yourself so be careful, you try this at your own risk...thanks

Have been having issues for a month or so with 95 Cougar not starting on first try...double-check that car is in park, etc....eventually will start. Yesterday ignition made a 'pop' then started, but now...

sounds like there is a relay for ignition stuck on. As I'm unfamiliar with your particular car, I'm sorry that I can't help further. It is possible that the relay had a poor contact, hence not starting, then it has welded itself together due to the poor contact, hence not switching ignition off...hope this helps

1995 Cavalier Z24 Car Wont Start

You either have a bad solenoid on your starter OR a bad ignition switch as these are the only two things that can cause the symptom you describe... I lean to the solenoid first, RARELY does an ignition switch sieze up in the start position but it is a possibility. Several national chain parts stores can test the starter for you (GM starters have the starter solenoid mounted directly to the starter and you need to remove the starter to get to it, so you would take the whole unit in to test it... REMEMBER to disconnect the battery first!)

Anti-theft system stuck triggered

Anti-theft does not disable the lock cylinder itself it only keeps vehicle from starting, lock cylinder will still turn and energize the electronics. Sounds like you have a stuck tumbler in the lock cylinder itself, some times turning steering wheel with one hand while trying to turn the key with the other will free it up.
