First check to see if you are getting fuel to the carb. Take off the fuel line at the carb and crank the engine. If you get fuel the problemis in the carb if not the problem is fuel pump related. That means on manual pumps the pump or pick up ion the tank. On electric pumps you have to see if you are getting current and that you have a good ground to the pump. If no current check the fuse then the fuel pump relay. if you get current and the ground is good the pump or pick up is bad. The pick up is a sock or filter in the tank on the tank unit. If it is clogged the pump can't get any fuel to pump. This should get you on your way and help you on fuel problems on other things as well, such as lawn mower. This is the way to check the fuel systems. Good luck! take your time and be careful since you are working with gas and fires can happen.

Hey i have a 1998 chevy 1500 the truck will start for1 to 5 seconds and then it dies i do not understand what the problem is please help

Hi James:
Since it starts you have spark so I'd be looking at the fuel delivery end of things. Most of us pump the gas pedal so that would prime the motor (accelerator pump) so there's fuel in the carb. I'd be looking at gummed up jets as a possible and trying to clean up the carb.
Now, if you tell me it's a diesel I'll be completely demoralized.

I put a brand new pump and filter on it and once my 87 dodge dakota warms up it starts spitting and sputtering once it dies there is no gas going to the carb until it cools down?? Why?

Interesting.
Its possible the vent for the gas tank is not working - - you might try running the truck with the gas cap loose to verify.
You have checked the carb and you know for a fact there is no fuel inside it when it dies ? And you know the pump is not pumping fuel when it dies ?

1987 mercrusier 180hp wont stay running unless i pump the gas

Could be a small amount of rust got into fuel filter from sitting empty, try changing fuel filter before worrying about the fuel pump.Filters could be partly plugged and its always smart to start with the cheaper fixes first.

I have a 1981 ramcharger 318 4 barrel edelbrock carb. it starts fine, drives well for about 15 min but dies. dies quicker when 4 barrels kick in. about 2 min after dying it will start up fine and do it...

Those rattly noises are detonations,  caused by a very lean mixture. All the other symptoms indicate that the fuel flow to the carb is too low. Since you have replaced the pump and the filter, the only other things left to check are the lines and the tank sump. Or you could install a much larger pump.

Fuel is not passing through

Check the fuel regulator in the carb/throttle body & check voltage of your injectors

Dies out and when you push on the gas it dies and will not stay started - have to power brake when idleing

if it is carburated it sounds like bad accelerator pump in carb, or plugged fuel filter. if you haven't changed the fuel filter recently i'd start with that.if that was done than you may have a bad carb accelerator pump. needs rebuild or replaced.
