Question about Mitsubishi Eclipse

The car's interior in totally stripped., trying to solve this problem. Intermittently applying grounds to the door relay and rear defroster, somehow all tied in together. They all ty into the keyless entery and the tccs box, clipped on to the back of the fuse box. What started all this was charging a 16 1/2 volts because of bad wiring to an alternator( got hot)but the alternator is working fine but something shorted out down the line. Tried everything switch everything out of the harness to a different piece. Door locks only work if you unplug something and the windows still go up and down when key is out.

That means the battery is not dead. When the voltage surge occurred, during the charging process where, as you have mentioned that the alternator is still O.K. but the current was much higher than the normal charging current. We can deduce that since the alternator got hot, it must have caused a meltdown of the insulation of one or more wires, and he naked/exposed wiring got cross-connected, but, not to the body of the car, which is always acting as the ground(+ve).
The end result would have the battery been drained, overnight, hich has'nt happened. This meltdown of insulation of some wires is making all those circuits(wherever it has occurred), becoming live with current flowing in on to 2 or more circuits. Switching ON the ignition key, i.e. turning the ignition key the first notch, all these circuits will simultaneously get activated, resulting in bizarre things happening when any one of these is switched n
The only solution is to get the main wires replaced. The fault will bot happen in only one place but in many places, which can be checked & identified by a trained electrician(automotive). But how many patches where this has happened would you be comfortable & confidant that the job(patchwork) will last?
My recommendation would be to change the entire wiring of the car, except for the engine side which would theoretically be least damaged, so might as well do the complete re-wiring to be on the safe side........................sodeep

The interior lamps consists of two groups, lamps that can not be dimmed and lamps that can be dimmed. This first group consists of lamps that may not be dimmed. This includes those lamps that may be manually turned on by placing the interior lamp switch to the DOME position, or by opening a door or a compartment:
• Door courtesy lamps
• Footwell courtesy lamps
• Instrument panel (I/P) compartment lamp
• Overhead console courtesy lamps
• Reading courtesy lamps
• Rear compartment courtesy lamp
• Roof rail courtesy lamps
• Sunshade vanity mirror lamps

Interior Lamps Dimming
This group of interior lighting includes lamps which may be dimmed. This group uses a combination of class 2 controlled illumination and incandescent lamps:
• Air temperature switch
• Cigar lighter lamp
• Door switches
• Driver information center (DIC) switch
• Headlamp switch
• Head-up display (HUD) switch
• Heated seat switches
• HVAC control assembly
• Instrument panel cluster (IPC)
• Memory function switch
• Radio
• Steering wheel controls
• Window switches
For the interior lighting to be dimmed the following conditions must be met:
• A low light level has been detected by the dash integration module (DIM)
• Headlamp switch is placed in to the PARK or HEAD position
• Ignition switch is placed in the ON position
Then all class 2 displays and all incandescent back lighting will be illuminated to the level set by the instrument panel (I/P) dimmer switch. When the I/P dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, all class 2 displays and all incandescent back lighting respond from minimum intensity to maximum brightness.
The DIM supplies battery positive voltage to the coil side of the PRK LP relay in the rear fuse block.
When the I/P dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, then the instrument panel module (IPM), W/CJ2, or climate control panel (CCP), W/C67, applies a message to the class 2 communication circuit to the DIM. The DIM then applies a ground to the park lamp relay control circuit. This energizes the PRK LAMP relay and allows battery positive voltage to be applied through the DIMR fuse to the DIM. The DIM then illuminates the following incandescent lamps through the incandescent dimming output circuit:
• Cigar lighter lamp
• DIC Switch
• Headlamp switch
• HUD switch
• HVAC control assembly
• IPC
• Radio
• Steering wheel controls
The DIM also applies a message to the following class 2 controlled illumination components:
• Drivers door module (DDM)
• HVAC control assembly
• IPC
• Radio
The DDM will then send a message through the simple bus interface (SBI) to the RH front door module (RFDM). The door modules will then illuminate the following components through the incandescent dimming output circuit:
• Air temperature switch
• Heated seat switches (W/KA1)
• Memory function switch (W/A45)
• Power door lock switches
• Power window switches
The ground for these components are provided from the DDM and RFDM.
The following components are grounded at G200:
• Headlamp switch
• HVAC control assembly
• IPC
• Radio
• Steering wheel controls
The following components are grounded at G201:
• Cigar lighter lamp
• DIC Switch
• HUD switch

Overhead Console Lamp and Roof Rail Courtesy/Reading Lamps
The courtesy/reading lamp is a duel purpose lamp that can be illuminated two different ways. First, the lamp can be turned ON during courtesy lamp operation as described above. Second, the lamps can be turned ON individually for reading lamp operation by the lamp switch. The BCM supplies battery voltage from the INT LAMPS fuse through the inadvertent power courtesy lamps circuit to the courtesy/reading lamps for reading lamp operation only. Ground for the courtesy lamp module or the roof/rail reading lamps is provided at G402

Courtesy Lamps
When either one of the front doors is opened, ground is applied through the door latch door open switch and the door open switch signal circuit to the door module indicting the door open position. In response to this signal, the door module sends a GMLAN serial data message to the BCM of the door open position. Or, when either one of the rear doors is opened, ground is applied through the door latch door open switch and the rear door open switch signal circuit to the BCM is indicating the rear door open position. Once a door open message or signal received, the BCM will then apply battery voltage from the CTSY/RF TRN fuse through the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuits illuminating the lamps listed below:
• Overhead console lamp
• Roof rail courtesy lamps
• Footwell courtesy lamps The BCM receives battery voltage from the INT LAMPS fuse in order to supply power to the inadvertent courtesy lamps. Inadvertent power courtesy lamp feature provides a similar function for the interior lamps as a retained accessory power feature. The BCM will energize the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit when the BCM is in the active state (awake). When the inadvertent power courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit is energized, it supplies voltage to all the interior lights listed below. The BCM will continue to supply voltage to the interior lamps after the ignition is turned OFF so that the interior lamps may be operated.
• Overhead Console Reading Lamps
• Roof Rail Reading Lamps
• Vanity Mirror Lamps
• I/P Compartment Lamp
• Rear Compartment Courtesy Lamp
In the event that any of these lamps were to remain illuminated for a period of more than 20 minutes with the ignition switch in the OFF position and no BCM input activity, the BCM will deactivate the inadvertent power supply voltage circuit to prevent a total battery discharge condition. The BCM receives battery voltage from the CTSY/RF TRN fuse in order to supply power to the courtesy lamps. The BCM applies this voltage to the courtesy lamps through the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuits. When any door is opened, the door open switch contacts close and the BCM receives a door-open signal. If the BCM receives a door lock or unlock signal, the BCM will activate the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuit, providing battery voltage to the dome lamps and the left and right footwell courtesy lamps. The courtesy lamps can be manually activated by placing the interior lamp switch in the DOME position. Rear fuse box. INT LP 10 amp . there is also INT LP relay in the same rear fuse box .
Fuse Block - Rear
Under the rear seat, on the left side of the floor pan
The INT LP fuse in the fuse block - rear supplies battery positive voltage to the normally open switch contacts of the INT LP relay. The INT LP fuse also supplies battery positive voltage to the INT LP relay control circuit. The fuse block - rear also supplies battery positive voltage to the relay control circuit for the front courtesy lamp. The door modules communicate on a simple bus interface (SBI). When you open any door, the switch contacts of the door open switch close. When a door open signal circuit is grounded, that door module sends a message to the drivers door module (DDM) in order to indicate that a door is open. The DDM sends a class 2 message to the rear integration module (RIM) in order to indicate which door is open. The RIM activates the INT LP relay in order to provide battery positive voltage to the interior courtesy lamps. When any front door is opened, the RIM will energize the FRT CTSY lamp relay grounding the I/Pcourtsey lamps at G302. Depending on which doors are opened, front or rear, the proper interior courtesy lamps illuminate. The RIM provides a pulse width modulated ground to all interior courtesy lamps for the interior lights theater dimming feature. Some of the courtesy lamps are also used as reading lamps, each reading lamp may be manually turned on or off using it's own respective switch

Your interior lights are controlled by the GEM - generic electronic module !
Battery Saver The battery saver relay is controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM) and is located in the fuse junction panel. The battery saver relay is designed to supply B+ voltage to the following:
  • dome and map lamp switches
  • visor lamps
  • glove box lamp switch
  • interior lamp switch
  • interior courtesy lamp relay
  • delayed accessory relay
The function of the battery saver relay is to prevent excessive battery drain by interior lighting circuits. The GEM supplies a ground signal to the battery saver relay anytime one of the wake-up inputs of the GEM is activated to operate the battery saver relay. A wake-up command is sent when:
  • any door becomes ajar or is opened or closed.
  • the ignition key is inserted or removed.
  • the ignition switch is turned from OFF to RUN.
  • the ignition switch is turned from OFF to ACC.
  • a wake-up request is received from the remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module (if equipped).
  • The GEM will maintain the ground input with ignition in RUN or for 40 minutes from the last input activation with ignition in the OFF position. After 40 minutes the ground signal is discontinued.
This de-engergizes the battery saver relay preventing B+ voltage supply to the controlled switches and circuits.
  • Courtesy Lamp On Continuously
  • Short to power.

  • Remove interior lamp relay.

all the lights above the dash do not work ?????? DOME light's ??? No light's come on when you open the door or any door ? Wouldn't think all the door ajar switches bad at one time .
Interior Lamps

• Auxiliary dome lamp (SEO, RPO 6C7)
• Dome lamp
• instrument panel (I/P) compartment lamp
• Inside rear view mirror lamps
• I/P courtesy lamps
• Reading lamps
• Rear compartment courtesy lamp
• Sunshade vanity mirror lamps
Battery positive voltage is applied at all times to the DIC/RKE fuse and to the switched side of the BATT RUNDOWN PROTECTION relay in the right I/P junction block. The DIC/RKE fuse supplies battery positive voltage to the coil side of the BATT RUNDOWN PROTECTION relay. When the ignition is turned to the ON position, the body control module (BCM) provides a ground to the Inadvertent relay control circuit. This energizes the BATT RUNDOWN PROTECTION relay and applies battery positive voltage to I/P BRP fuse and to the TRK/ROOF/BRP fuse. Battery positive voltage is applied from the I/P BRP fuse to the I/P courtesy lamps, I/P compartment lamp and to the I/P compartment feed circuit to the BCM. Battery positive voltage is also applied from the TRK/ROOF/BRP fuse to the:

If the BCM receives a door lock or unlock input signal, the BCM will activate the BATT RUNDOWN PROTECTION relay, which provides battery positive voltage to all interior courtesy lamps. When any door is opened, the door jam switch contacts close and the BCM receives a door-open input signal. The BCM then applies a ground to the theater dimming ground control circuit illuminating the courtesy and dome lamps.
After all the doors are closed, the courtesy lamps remain illuminated for approximately 40 seconds. The courtesy lamps will also turn on and remain illuminated for approximately 15 seconds after the ignition key is removed, prior to any door being opened.
When the headlamp switch is placed in the DOME position, the BCM receives a ground signal. The BCM then applies a ground to the theater dimming ground control circuit. This illuminates the dome and roof rail lamps.
The courtesy lamps will normally turn off using the theater dimming feature. The BCM provides a pulse width modulated ground to all courtesy/reading, dome, and inside rear view mirror lamps for the theater dimming feature. The BCM will immediately turn off the courtesy lamps if a door lock command is received with all the doors closed, or if the ignition switch is turned to either the ON or RUN position.
The BCM activates the interior lighting output 15 seconds after receiving the class 2 message "Airbags Deployed" from the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The interior lamps remain activated for 25 minutes.

The door ajar switch is part of the lock actuator inside the door !

My rear defrost desn't work and my wiper is making noise. i think its a grounding problem. Am i right?


The Tahoes have a common problem with corroded terminals at the rear cargo door switches.
Open up the rear and look for brass colored pin switches, these make contact to a brass colored contact strip when the door or hatch is closed.
Clean all contacts with a mild sand paper or steel wool and apply a thin coat of grease.
Bad ground? Well it's that or power!

Interior dome and door courstesy lights intermittently flash


try changing the door jam switches,one or all of them lost their ground.When the doors are closed the switches ground and the lights go out.If they are on a timer device the timer may be defective.

This may be just a case of inadvertently hitting the window lock out n th driver door window switch by mistake. Check that first. Here's some background on window operation

Principles of Operation
The driver power window regulator motor is controlled directly by the master window/door lock/unlock switch (and its integrated "auto down" module). Power is supplied to the power window relay and the master window/door lock/unlock switch, and the passenger power window switch when the SEC/timer module grounds the coil side of the power window relay. The SEC/timer module will ground this relay when the ignition is in the ON position and will remain energized for approximately 15 minutes or until the driver or passenger door is opened.
The driver power window regulator motor is a reversible motor that is operated by applying power and ground to the motor leads to lower the window, and then reversing polarity on those leads to raise the window.
The passenger power window regulator motor is controlled directly by the passenger power window switch and can also be controlled by the master window/door lock/unlock switch. Power is supplied to the power window relay and the master window/door lock/unlock switch, and the passenger power window switch when the SEC/timer module grounds the coil side of the power window relay. The SEC/timer module will ground this relay when the ignition is in the ON position and will remain energized for approximately 15 minutes or until the driver or passenger door is opened.
The passenger power window regulator motor is a reversible motor, which is operated by applying power and ground to the motor leads to lower the window, and then reversing polarity on those leads to raise the window.
The power rear quarter glass is also directly controlled by the master window/door lock/unlock switch. The power rear quarter glass power latches also utilize reversible motors. The power rear quarter glass power latches are operated by applying power and ground to the motor leads to open the window, and then reversing polarity on those same leads to close the window.
