4x4s never get good gas mileage. You are dragging around alot of extra weight. If you dont need 4WD then maybe get 2WD. I dont want to tell you what to do but your truck is much heavier than a 2WD and thats why 4WD gets worse MPG.If you have the 360 engine, they never where good on gas.Make sure your air filter and fuel filter are fresh.Fuel filter every 30000 miles.Try using an oil called Slick 50 with a good filter.Oil and filter changes at no more than 4000 miles. It works a little in reducing friction.Dump some of the STP fuel treatment in your gas tank 2-3 times a year. And drive it easy. No jack rabbit starts and dont tailgate, this causes you to alway be one the gas, brake, gas, brake, gas, break this wastes gas among other things.
Im only telling you this to help you save gas.
I hope this helps you.

Is the check engine light on? If so, rent a scanner, read the code(s), and pursue to repair(s). Is the air cleaner dirty? Is the transmission automatic or manual? If automatic, do the shifts seem crisp or do they seem to slip? Check tire pressure. Do you run 4-wheel drive at all times? If so, invest in Warn hubs for the front wheels if there is no built-in wheel disconnect. Does the vehicle coast well if shifted to neutral while going down the road? Does the exhaust system sound 'throaty'? If not, it may be partially plugged. Do you carry heavy loads on bad roads?

I drove it with the 4 wheel drive on dry pavement for a long while and my mileage has gotten poor, what could have gotten damaged from my mistake?

The only problem using 4x4 on dry pavement that may develop is with the front differential/axles. It will have no adverse affect on fuel mileage when the 4x4 is disengaged. Fuel economy will be affected if running in 4x4

Poor mpg on 2003 f150 ford5.4 4x4 super crew

if you are getting about 14 on average no matter what you do it will not improve, Don't fall for any misleading claims because nothing you add will work. It takes fuel to make power the only improvement i have seen is by reprograming the computer but you must loose power in order to save fuel.

The display reads 14 mpg how can is be in proved?

You cannot rely on these mileage displays. To know for sure fill the fuel tank up and write down the mileage on the vehicle at that time. Drive the car until you have 1/4 fuel in the tank. Fill the tank and note the amount of fuel it took to fill it up. Divide the gallons necessary to fill it up into the miles driven since the last fill up. You now know the mpg the car got. Example: You drove 300 miles and the car used 16 gallons of fuel. 300 divided by 16 equals 18.75 mpg.

Hello there:
If you look at your owners manual it will tell you that it is recommended that you only use the 89 or greater octane fuel and any thing below this can damage the engine i have the same truck and i have dome a lot of testing with the different fuels and they are right if i spend the extra 5 or 6 cents to get the good fuel i get better fuel mileage along with following the a regular tuneup intervals and also keeping the tires properly inflated helps out a lot ok So try these easy steps and you will find out that you will start getting better mileage

Please tell me the fuel capacity and expected mileage

fuel tank is 20 gallons, this means you can get about 18.5 gallons in the tank in the real world, the fuel mileage is about 10-12 MPG in town and 14-16 MPG on the hiway, the assumes it is a 4 wheel drive, they are heavier.
