Question about 1996 Eagle Vision

Have a constant growl when driving. Transmission shifts OK and growl remains constant. would it most likely be the transaxle or differential?

If the noise gets louder on one side if you swerve down the road - it is most likely a wheel bearing.

Jack up the vehicle and try to move the tire in and out and laterally.
Any movement indicates the bearing is bad.

The differential is inside and part of the transaxle. A transaxle has both the transmission and the differential together as a single unit. On rear wheel drive cars, the differential would be in the rear end- the large center case on the rear axle. With front wheel drive, the differential is incorporated within the transaxle. It is used to keep the front drive wheels turning properly during steering turns.

The differential uses the same oil or fluid as in the transmission/transaxle case-it is all the same piece, not serviced or flushed separately from the transmission, or transaxle as front wheel drive cars are called.

I have a2000 chevy blazer 4 wheel drive 2 door ....terrible constant growling noise. Cant figure out from where but it doesnt stop or really even change when turning left or right. Thought it was a hub...


Driveline and wheel bearing noises can be very decieving. - especially on 4X4 vehicles. These noises can travel through the vehicle and sound like they are coming from one place when they are caused by something else. I have 2 recomendations:

1. Take it to a professional that deals with 4X4 drive trains and have him lend you an ear.

2. get the thing on a lift and listen to the components with a stethescope. It could be a wheel bearing, a differential, a transfer case, or even the transmission making a noise like you have described.

When starting out tranny does not want to shift from first to second gear, then it does shift. then when coming to a stop torque converter shutters.


This indicates the transmission is leaking internally - it cannot maintain line pressure to shift. If it shifts out of first after about a minute of driving it means that the seals inside the case and the band brakes are wearing out. I went through that and found it wise to install a rebuilt unit - if it is a front wheel drive unit then the transmission and differential are in one compact unit. If the torque converter growls or groans it means the front oil pump seals and pump are wearing out.

Fluid Level Check

Automatic Transaxle Differential Fluid
The manufacturer does not specify a maintenance interval for changing the differential oil/fluid. However, periodic inspection of the level of the fluid (and the fluid itself) is recommended. A high oil level indicates one of three conditions. First, the previous mechanic/owner may have accidentally overfilled the transaxle if the vehicle was not level. Secondly a high oil level (assuming the vehicle is level) can be caused by excessive condensation (water) in the differential. This may be a result of constant operation in wet areas, or high humidity. Moisture can condense inside of the transaxle in the same manner that a can of cold soda 'sweats' when removed from a refrigerator. Lastly, a high oil condition may indicate that the internal seals that separate the differential section from the torque converter/gearset are possibly faulty, and ATF has contaminated the differential oil.

NOTE Access to the fill/level plug is difficult with the vehicle on the ground. The vehicle must be level to ensure an accurate reading. Carefully raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands in order to access the fill/level plug. Make sure the vehicle is level before completely removing the plug.

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle such that it is level.
  3. Place a suitable drain receptacle underneath the rear of the transaxle.
  4. Remove the filler plug on the side of the transaxle, near the halfshaft flange.
  5. Note the oil level; it should be even with the lower edge of the filler hole.
  6. If the oil level is low, add the proper type and viscosity as necessary to obtain the correct oil level.
  7. Install the filler plug, and tighten it securely.

Is the transaxle & transmission the same


yes it is, the transmission is the gearing for the vehicle and sisnce it contains the differential for the drive axles the call it a transaxle

Differential


Your car has what is called a transaxle. This is the transmission and traditional differential in one unit. There is no actual differential per say.

Typically operation noise will occur if the output gears are failing. It will be noisier on the deceleration than the acceleration. This is usually a whining noise. Sometimes this can be jerky during operation.

All of the instances you mentioned can cause a transaxle unit to fail.

Transmission range sensor and neutral safety switch are the same thing (when you go to buy the part). It's at the top of your transmission. You'll see the shifting cable connected to it. Here are the instructions for adjustment:
Shift Control Linkage
The transmission shift linkage adjustments must be performed in the order in which they appear.

Column Shift

Place transaxle range selector lever in (D) (OVERDRIVE) position or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS). A weight of 1.4 kg (3 lb) should be hung on the transaxle range selector lever to ensure the lever is located firmly on the (D) (OVERDRIVE) or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS) detent.

Loosen manual control lever-to-control cable retaining nut.

Move transaxle manual control lever to OVERDRIVE position or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS), second detent from most rearward position.

Tighten retaining nut to 17-23 Nm (13-17 lb-ft). Check operation of transaxle in each transmission range position. Make sure that park mechanism and transmission range (TR) sensor are functioning properly.

Floor Shift

Position transaxle range selector lever in DRIVE position against rearward stop. The floor transaxle range selector lever must be held in the rearward position using a constant force of 1.4 kg (3 lb) while linkage is being adjusted.

Loosen manual control lever-to-control cable retaining nut.

Move transaxle manual control lever to DRIVE position, second detent from most rearward position.

Tighten retaining nut to 17-23 Nm (13-17 lb-ft).

Check operation of transaxle in each transmission range position. Make sure that park mechanism and transmission range (TR) sensor are functioning properly.



To take it off, it's a couple of retaining bolts and a wiring harness.

your trans has lectronic controls to operate the shifting of your trans. If there is a defect, a fault code will be stored in the computer, called a DTC. You need to have someone with a scan tool check for the fault code. It is likely a solenoid that is not working or stuck.

Get the codes first. Autozone can run the test for free on engines, maybe trans codes too. Call your local Autozone or big parts store and ask them.

You may need your PCM, Powertrain Control Module reflashed by a Ford Dealer.
Try disconnecting your battery for 1/2 hour and then reconnect and see what happens. It will run a little rough and shfit hard until it relearns your engine/trans characteristics.
