As in won't start in park, but will turn over in 2nd? If so, safety neutral switch at transmission.

Wont start

1st-Check Fuel(disconnect intake hose and spray carb cleaner or light fluid in the throttle body). reconnect and try starting. Check and listen to make sure the pump is priming itself when the key is switched on.
2nd-Check Fire(spark). Make sure that spark is getting to the plugs
3rd-Check Air(compression)

When putting van in gear the engine runs rough

how about putting the van in drive with one foot down hard on the brake and rev the engine, does it smooth out now? if it smooths out, i would pull the air cleaner tube to the throttle body and spray the throttle body with carb cleaner, be careful if using the red tube, I have had it blow off before into the intake, not good, open the accelerator and spray it out really good, it will to start until all the cleaner clears out.

I have a 1993 jeep grand cherokee with a staight six , automatic trans,, it starts just fine but when you put it in gear whether it is reverse or drive , it will just die and before it will start back you...

another case of probable dirty throttle body. those 4.0 liters get real dirty in the throttle body. take off the air tube and spray carb cleaner down the bore and squirt that smaller hole the dtepper motor is in. get your tooth brush and open throttle by hand scrub away all that black goo in the bore and on the plat rinse with more spray untill sparkling. put together start. it will spuuter a bit cause of cleaner,

1991 Buick Regal, auto trans, 3.8L engine, problem; upon starting it would idle at higher than normal rpm and would not drop back down even when warmed up.

the problem may be a buildup of carbon or fuel varnish deposits in the idle speed control valve (also called the idle air control valve or IAC valve). The cure for this condition is to clean the valve with some aerosol throttle cleaner or engine top cleaner. disconnect the air ductwork from the throttle body. Start the car and run at about 1500 rpms spray the cleaner directly into the throat of the throttle body. Turn off the engine and let sit for a few minutes. Then repeat the process a cpouple of times. if that does not work, you can remove the IAC and clen it by spraying into the two holes on the underside of the valve. If not, then you need to replace the valve.
