SOURCE: No motor manual what type of transmission fluid is recommended

Check with chevy a dealership service (phone call) , there are 2 different types if your car is an automatic. If your car is a standard , it could be gear lube , or even Automatic trans fluid.

SOURCE: adding transmission fluid to 98 pontiac sunfire

There is a plug located on top of the transmission under the brake master cylinder. It is held in place by a bolt on the side of the transmission near the firewall. Remove the bolt, then remove the plug. Fill it until the fluid comes out of the hole.

Sounds like the clutch is going out. I would check the operation of the clutch slave cylinder. Also check the clutch master cylinder fluid level.

The clutch system is hydraulic just like your brakes are. You have a slave cylinder and a master cylinder. You must have a leak somewhere, and will have to see what part it is, or have it looked at. Once replaced, the system needs to be bled of air just like brakes do.

1997 Sunfire

It has been my experience that a small amount lateral and axial play is usually acceptable because the splines aren't normally press fit but held in with a spring clip. Some models are secured with a roll pin through the axle. I don't have any first hand experience with the Sunfire/Cavilier though. Is there any fluid leaking past the seals at that location?

The output bearings will usually require the transmission to be pulled. If you are capable, pull the CV shafts and see if the play is in the transmission output or in the splines. Note that some vehicles have special procedures for removing the CV shafts because they support internal parts of the transmission, so get your hands on a Chiltons or Haynes manual first for the proper procedure.
