2003 honda accord 2.4 power stering hard,replace pump got little softer but still hard


The steering is controlled by the steering rack,
& they get stiff because no one changes the fluid
every 3 years

The upper strut bearings fail & make steering stiff

Doubt the pump was a problem at all

Here is the oil leaking Problem Identifying Technique

Engine oil leaks from the valve cover gasket are common.

  • The intake manifold plenum gasket may leak and cause increased oil consumption/burning and a spark knock during acceleration; the gasket should be replaced.
  • External oil leaks from valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets (front or rear), and the rear crankshaft (rear main) seal area are common. The rear main seal is an unlikely source. Normally, the bearing cap mating surfaces (as well as the sealing surface between the oil pan and bearing cap) are the source for the leaks.
  • Engine oil leaks at the distributor can be misdiagnosed as leaks from theintake manifold seal, oil pan gasket, or rear crankshaft (rear main) seal. A revised distributor is available if oil is found inside the distributor.
  • If the oil filter casing shows signs of distortion from excessive oil pressure, theoil pump should be replaced.
  • Often misdiagnosed as a leaking oil filter gasket, the oil filter adapter can seep from between the adapter and engine block.
  • Carbon buildup on the top of the piston is common. As the buildup increases with mileage and over time, symptoms may vary from light ticking, to ticking/hammering, to hammering/knocking noises. Fuel injector cleaner often solves the problem.

    If the steering is getting a little hard to turn at low speeds, this would indicate a loss of Power Steering, and the steering is reverting to "Non-Power" steering, just like the days of the Ford Model T or Model A. Loss of power steering is usually caused by low level of PSF (Power Steering Fluid).
    So first on my checklist would be checking the PSF level in the reservoir.
    Also bleed (air) from PS (Power Steering) pump.

    The Ford Five Hundred has front MacPherson struts, so check these for leakage (of the dampening fluid in the strut cylinder), or breakage of their coil springs.
    These springs can actually weaken over time, but this is impossible to see - you must "feel" it by bouncing the strut up & down - preferably with your hands on the top of the strut tower in the engine compartment (rather than on the exterior finish).
    If the MacPherson struts have weak/broken springs, these components are not separately serviceable, and the strut would have to be replaced as a unit (and preferably both left/right to maintain smooth/even ride).

    The Five Hundred also has rear shock absorbers with springs - check for leaks/breakage/weakness here too.

    Stiff turning the wheel, we have power steering. have had a flush done and a new pump put on also, but still hard to turn. any ideas?


    i would think about some grease in the ball joints and tie rod ends, and about the upper strut bearing. at 10 years any and all of them could be worn, causing drag on the steering.

    hi from uk from the symptoms you clearly describe may i suggest that you have someone to check both visually and physically by feeling the front suspension strut coil springs on both sides this problem sounds very much like you have a broken/cracked coil spring on one of the struts hence the crack ! when turning ? the stiffness is that the coil is broken and is not rotating on the top of suspension bearing as it is supposed to just one point? if this is the fault may i suggest that you change both coil springs at same time ? these can be purchased at good motor factors if you wish to diy or have some motor mechajc friend? do them for you? also check the actual struts for oil leakage as this is common cause of coils breaking due to no damping of strut/shock absorbing of suspension hope this helps ?

    start first with the power steering fluid if it is at optimal level and not at the min. at times the tire pressure would add to the difficulty in turning. Check also for leaks. There might be bad oil seals in the power steering system that you need to attend to.

    HAD TOP MOUNTS AND TRACKING DONE. STEERING FEELS A BIT STIFF.


    its apossibility that when you got new top strut mountings fitted it might be fact that it will be like new & you are not used to it also not having power steering you might be feeling the effects what i would suggest you do is continue to drive itnormal & see if it eases of if this doesn't sound like problem & stiff through column or steering rack let me know because not been able to feel it its hard to tell thank you.
