Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3 Answers

My Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 5.2 is just running on 4 cylinders (5,6,7,and 8). Compression of all cyl. is OK, sparkplugs and cables have been renewed, fuelinjectors are working, gaskets on top of the engine have been renewed. When engine is running (very bad) I smell unburned fuel outside. What can be the trouble.

Yes, we have checked out all the sparkplugs, so it must be something different

  • anthony_fint Sep 27, 2009

The car is from end 1996 and I have replaced the cap.

    Could it be the coil?

    What is a ECU?

  • anthony_fint Sep 28, 2009

Today the boys in the garage discovered that the spring of the exhaustvalve of cylinder 1 is broken so that the valve is not lifting enough.
Could that be the cause of the trouble, also in cylinder 2,3 and 4?

Your vehicle apparently has one ignition coil, and is operable. The ECU aka PCM is responsible for controlling spark to all cyclinders. I recommend check for fault codes.

Autozone will check it for free

No, can't be the coil because the other 4 cylinders are firing, has to be the ECU

Have you checked to see if the coil is provideing spark for 1,2,3 and 4?
With the engine off loosen the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Just let them set easy on the plugs without snaping them on the plugs. You will need some plastic plyers or something to remove the wires without getting shocked. Start the engine and one at a time pull the wire off a spark plug then put it back on. When you pull it off it should make a difference in how the engine runs.Go to the next plug and see if it makes a difference then put it back on. If it makes no difference( no spark coming from the coil) then buy a new coil.
I hope this helps you.

99 jeep grand cherokee has power to one coil pack but no spark

The 6 cyl engine uses a coil strip for all 6 cylinders, and the 8 cyl uses one coil per cylinder. So I assume you have an 8 cyl engine.
You are saying one coil has power but is not firing ?
Have you switched it with another cylinder to eliminate the coil as a possible problem ?

Wher is the ignition control module located in a jeep grand cherokee lorado

6 or 8 cylinder? Either way the computer (ECM) controls the coils. 6 cyl has a 'coil rail' and 8 cyl had individual coils on each cylinder. There are crankshaft and camshaft sensors that tell the ecm when to fire each cylinder

I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee high output 4.7 8 cylinder engine. i change the oil with synthetic oil every 3500. mechanic said that one of the cylinders has no compression. what could be the problem?

The lack of compression can be the result of a bad valve, a bad ring, or a bad head gasket. You'll need to do a leakdown test to deterine where exactly it is leaking.

99 dodge caravan #4 cylinder misfires, i replaced spark plug wires and spark plugs. Scanner showed #4 still misfiring, could this be the coil?

It could very well be a bad coil pack,or you have low compression in that cylinder. If the compression is good then go with the coil pack,if not you may need a head gasket or an intake manifold gasket.

97 Jeep grand cherokee 6 cyl. idles down to 0 and dies.

any leaks in intake or exhaust upstream of the sensors, sparkplug condition and engine controls/sensors for out of range operation (including fuel pressure and condition of regulator)
IAC should be cleaned and checked as this can cause poor idle and shut down. I'm not saying not to change O2 sensors, but unless everything else if OK, it probably won't help.

2002 jeep cheroke misfires on cylinder #4

Check intake gasket and vecuum hoses near intake runner #4. To do this spray carb cleaner at parting line between manifold and block while engine is running. If leaking rpm will dramatically change. A leak will lean out that cyl and cause misfire

Need the friing order

Hi,
Take a close look at the HT distributor. There should be some numbers on there.

90% of the time it's 1342 on a 4 cylinder, but 2413 should also work.

This is presuming it's not a 6 or 8 pot in there.

Runs bad

I don't think 2 coils will go bad at the same time.
Is this a 6 or 8 cyl?
Could be a vacuum line that's common to both cylinders.
