Question about 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Front tire drags

If I turn the wheel too far on my 94 Grand Cherokee going forward or back it drags the right front tire which causes a crunching noise. What's wrong?

I have a 2000 Alero and have front wheel drive. My front left tire will rotate to go forward but as soon as I put the car in reverse the tire will rotate a little bit but than stops and drags with the car....


Sounds like a brake issue to me, like the caliper sticking. I've taken the axle, brakes and hub/wheel assemblies off these many times, pretty simple. If you choose to DIY, I would suggest you buy a Haynes manual....about $20 well worth the investment. The crunching sound maybe a damaged pad, or something that got lodged in there. You have my curiosity, wish I could see it for myself! :) If you aren't a DIYer, take it to a place that does free brake checks, I suspect you may possibly need a new caliper.

sounds like it time to have the front end balljoints inspected. Only with an inspection will you get the proper results. Why guess, this is a safety issue.

I'd bet your brake rotors are grooved and need to be resurfaced (or replaced if they are too thin). This also means you should replace the pads too.

Move the passenger side rear tire to the front, and passenger side front to driver side rear. Switch the driver side rear tire to the front and driver side front to passenger side rear. Repeat this "X" pattern each time you rotate the tires. Rotate the tires from side to side if the tires are different sizes on the front and rear.

Wheel alignment for automobile


Hello. Wheel alignment is the adjustment of the front and rear wheels so that they are correctly inline with each other and pointing straight forward. If they point to the left or right the car will pull to that side of the road while being driven. The front wheels also need to be adjusted to ensure they are not too far forward and riding on the back of the tire, or not too far back and riding on the front of the tire. Lastly, all tires need to be checked to ensure they are not leaning too far in or out of their wheelwell, causing the tires to become prematurely bald. For most vehicles it can cost you $40-$120 depending where its done, plus any shim kits needed to adjust the wheel allignment back to factory specs. Most shops provide 2 or 4 wheel alignment, so always ensure that they perform a 4 wheel alignment. Always ask for the alignment test reports for both before and after the work is performed so you can see for yourself which were out of alignment. Pot holes, curb-hopping, railroad/railway tracks, etc. play a huge part in your vehicle alignment going bad. 4 tires on some cars can cost you $500-1600 to replace, but an alignment check every 2-4 years will only cost you a very small amount, saving you time and money.

95 jeep cherokee at timess get a bad front wheel hop right side when going over 45 or 50


Wheel hop is when the tire/wheel assembly bounces off the ground...Usually encountered at the rear of vehicles in drag race situations, caused by suspension "wrap up". At the front of a vehicle, the only possibility is extremely bad shock absorber, aggravated by a tire that is extremely out of balance or out of round. Either way this condition is dangerous and should be checked out and corrected immediately, and should not be casually considered and "tinkered" with!!! Suspension and braking take pryority above all else. They can cause damage to you and others!!! Understand my point???

I'm not absolutely sure on the tire size for the jeep itself, but I think they are 225/65/R15's. Not absolutely sure.

As for the noise, from your explanation, it sounds like the transfer case is under a heavy bind. Take it off of the road in some grass or dirt and then move it forward a few feet then simply hit reverse. Don't move much maybe an inch and it may release the bind. Once you get the bind off the transfer case, it should slip out of 4wd, unless there is damage in the case/shifter itself.

When operating four wheel drives, with tires of different sizes it causes extreme stress on the gearing in the transfer case. Larger tires don't turn the axles as much as smaller tires. So, this causes stress in the driveline as the front is actually turning slower then the rear. In turn, this will put so much pressure on the gears that it could cause damage and the shifting mechanism will not work correctly to pull it out of 4wd engagement.

Try those ideas, and see if you can get it out of 4WD. Definitely put four tires on the jeep that are all the same size. This will keep you from having excessive stress on the transfer case and gearing therein.
