SOURCE: Cooling Fan Not Working

FIRST THING TO DO IS DISCONNECT THE FANS SENSOR ON THE ENGINE, THIS WILL THROW THE FAN INTO DEFAULT AND IT SHOULD COME ON, IF IT DOESN'T EITHER THE FAN MOTOR IS DEFECTIVE OR THE RELAY IS DEFECTIVE, OR BOTH, A SHORTED MOTOR WILL FRY A RELAY. DOES IT COME ON WITH THE AC TURNED ON?

SOURCE: overheating problem on a 1998 BMW 318ti

Perform a liquid block test (with the bottle of fluid over the radiator mouth.) If the blue liquid turns yellow or clear, you have hydrocarbons entering the cooling system (usually via head gskt.) If not, you have ruled out a costly repair.

Sounds like it overheats pretty easily, without t-stat! This block testing liquid is cheap, and will verify a suspected leaking head gasket without lengthy diagnosis. Hope it's better news, but good luck!

SOURCE: 1997 honda accord overheating

well you should first hard wire the non working fan to the battery to see if it is ok, then I would check the engine coolant temperature sensor, it is the sensor that tells the computer to turn the radiator fan on

COOLONG FANS NOT TURNING ON? CAR OVERHEATING......

Some vehicle's cooling radiator fan does not turn on untill needed. If your Temperature Gauge is working as far as you know, Try running your car for over 10 miles; the fan should start working. If not, check your fuses. You can also try to directly connect the radiator colling fan motor to the battery and see if the fan works. If not, the fan motor may not be working.

When I switch on the ignition sometimes the 318ti ,1998 don't start. The starting motor turns over but the radiator fan does not turn. the starting motor does not click in. someone told me that it may be...

The solenoid sends power to engage the starter to turn the engine. Also the starter may not be kicking out to start all the time. Either way these two are usually connected together and will be together when you purchase a new starter. The fans turn on after your car reaches a certain temp, to cool the radiator down. It's not like the older cars that turn all the time with a belt pulley system. Newer cars have relays and sensors that signal "getting hot, turn fans on".

Could be a bad relay in the fuse box.
It's the tall black one in the center of the relays.
