Timing 2000 Mazda 626 2.0L

My husband is a mechanic, but my (wife) car is giving him some trouble. The head has just been resurfaced and he is trying ti time the car. The valves are slapping the pistons. There is an "I" on the intake side and "E" on exhaust side and two dots on both sides and two cut outs on each end on both sides. How does he need to time this car? He has already tried to line up the "I" and "e" across from each other. He has tried lining the dots towards each other. Any suggestions? He has been doing this for 16 yrs and has never had trouble like this. This engine has been apart before and there is a chance that something has been put in the wrong position. Thanks so much!

You have a blown head gasket. Water is bypassing your head gasket and has mixed with your oil. Take to your mechanic, will have to resurface cylinder head, new gaskets, water pump, timing belts.

What if i replace my headgaskets and replaced my timing chains and resurfaces the heads want could make the my 2001 madza mpv minivan not start

It may be any number of things, but here's just a few:

1) Cam shaft position sensor incorrectly fitted or wiring faulty.
2) Compression incorrect due to over-skimming of the head.
3) Incorrect timing chain placement and/or faulty valve timing.

First look at this and make sure the plug wires are connected correctly. 3e7c3d3.png
If the plug wires are correct then it is obvious that the cam belt was installed incorrectly of a sensor was damaged during the installation. Take it back to the person who replace the belt and nicely demand they fix it.

2000 mazda bogging in all gears especially in 1st and 2nd gears ?

Judging from what i know, the timing on the engine is probably a bit off, and i remember reading the exact same problem on another web site and that is also what they said. So just check the timing on the engine or have it checked by a mechanic if you don't know how to do it.
