Question about 1998 Cadillac DeVille

Engine coolant fans will not start, where are the relays so that I can bypass them to check if the fans are good. Both fans are in sreial so I guess that they will not accept 12 volt directly from battery. Thanks in advance Janne

Bare in mind that the fans don't come on until the temp hits around 225 degrees.
If you switch your air con on they should run all of the time.

There can be a loose connection. Try to trace every connection of the Fans and to the Relays. Here is a reference Image :----------------

bypass the coolant fan switch connector while the engine is running. if fan comes on then you would need to check if the fan switch is faulty.

Fan senor switch for a 1997 jeep location

good question...
Fan, which fan?
1: heater fan (blower)
2: front A/C condensor fan
3: engine coolant fan. ????????????????????
i must guess engine option, so will guess, 4.0L I-6
why do you ask, i can tell what problem you have ,unless a symptoms is stated, is engine overheating?
the 2.5L and 4.0L have electric fans with the A/C option
and run by different rules,
with no A/C option the 4L uses a clutch fan.
chapter 7, page 8, FSM.

did you use a scan tool to see if the ECU, detects electric fan issues.
it does do that. page 19. and the 2 fuses? same page, same chapter.
the same chapter reveal the trip on , temperatures.

now for a jump to how it works page.
chapter 8w , wiring,
page 20 index.
8w-42 fan motor relay.
42-9 or PDF page 213
the answer is there. the fan is totally operatered
by the PCM, or ECU.
the ECU closes the relay to the fan
any time the ECT shows too hot.
the ECT is a PRIME sensor to run EFI, knows coolant temps at all time. so there is (was) a need for and switch or fan thermost
the PCM know the temp and closes the relay on demand.
the PCM has trip table,. the fan activate rule.

so if hot wiring the fan fails, the fan is bad
if the 4 voltage to the fan relay are good the relay is bad
if the fuse are blown the relay will no get voltage power.
if the PCM fails to ground the coil on the relay that means
the PCM thinks the engine is cold, is it?
if the coolant is cold then the the termostat is stuck open.

see how symptoms , prove what is going on,
is engine overheating, ?

if the engine is overheating,
we test the fan, if dead.
the fan comes on

the fan comes on by 4 rules, the A/C on or not.
ill answer for a/c off, lazy
fan comes on at 218F
fan trips off at 199F
the coolant thermostat is 195F.
so the test for the fan is to idle until the coolant hits 218F
and note the fan coming on,
that is the test, if it fails in any way we diagnose it with a simple voltmeter
how is that for an answer.
if you have sympotms , do post them so we can work the real problems.

Fan not working...my car is overheating

The fuses are located in the fuse box under the hood, but could be the fan motor too, check if you have power at the motor

check cooling fan fuse or fuse link.it all is good. fan relay or engine coolant temperature sensor.could have ECM FAULT it controls coolant fan relay and coolant fan.code scan for ECM FAULT YOU WILL SEE CHECK ENGINE FLASH IF PROBLEM IN THE ECM.but check cooling fan hot wire it using jumper wires to battery.if fan okay replace engine coolant temperature sensor.

Electric fan does not work

This can be due to a bad relay or coolant sensor that turns on the fan or a bad fan, a good test to do to see if the relay and the fan work is to start the engine and then turn on the ac, if the ac doesnt work then unplug the coolant temp sensor this will turn on the check engine light but it will reset when you restart engine, if the fan turns on then fan and relay are good and its the sensor, if the fan doesnt run then it may be the relay or fan, a quick test of the fan is to dissconnect plug to fan and run a power and ground wire to fan and if it runs then you have a bad relay, hope this helps,e0be4e7.gif

My carhas been over heating and i noticed my fan is not working on my ratiator. could it be just a fuse

Could be a fuse or a relay, could be coolant temperature sensor/fan switch. It could also be that the fan motor has failed. If the fuse is good, test the fan and relay by jumping pins 30 and 87a at the rad. fan relay socket. If the fan comes on, replace the relay and retest. You can also check for 12v signal and ground on the other pins when the engine is hot to verify the temp. sensor is operating normally. If no 12v or if there is no ground on the rtelay control pins (NOT 30 and 87a), the sensor is probably bad. If the sensor is good and relay is good, 99.9% chance the fan motor is bad, even if it starts when relay is bypassed. The motor takes more power to start than to keep running, and can disrupt operation of the relay if it is marginal. Also look for corroded contacts, esp. ground wire connections.

YOU CANT BYPASS THE COOLANT FANS TO OPERATE FULL SPEED.IF YOU TRY YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE HEAD ACHES AND PCM TROUBLES.YOUR THREE COOLANT FAN SPEED IS CONTROL BY THE POWER MODULE IT ASSISTS THE COMPUTER SWITCHING FAN SPEEDS AND CLIMATE CONTROL FUNCTION.CHECK ALL 3 FANS RELAYS ONE OF THEM IS NOT WORKING.IT WILL CAUSE FAN SPEED PROBLEMS.DONT BYPASS OR OVERRIDE FANS.IF SO.YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE PCM AND CLIMATE CONTROL PROBLEMS.IF YOU HAVE ALREADY CHECK 3 FAN RELAYS.THEY ARE GOOD LET THE CADILLAC DEALERSHIP CHECK IT OUT.
