1983 ford f250 will start but wont shut off when I turn the key to off position it stays running.I bought new battery and altenator. it start when I put the new altenator in

Does it keep cranking like when first starting or is it running normally and when you turn off the key it just keeps running if it's the first one the solenoid on the fender is N/G the engines running but the starter is still cranking trying to turn the engine over but it's already running///// next if it's running normally after starting no grinding from the starter being engaged like I just described then the ignition switch on the steering column is N/G//// THIS IS NOT THE IGNITION KEY SWITCH THAT YOU PUT THE KEY IN TO START THE TRUCK THIS IS LOCATED DOWN ABOUT HALFWAY BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL AND YOUR FEET THERE IS A ROD THAT COMES FROM THE KEY SWITCH WITH THE KEY THAT WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY YOU ARE MOVING THIS ROD WHICH MAKES THE SWITCH MOVE TO THE POSITION TO START THE TRUCK WHEN YOU LET GO THE SPRING INSIDE LET'S THE SWITCH MOVE TO THE RUN POSITION SO WHAT'S WRONG HERE IS THE SWITCH IS NOT OPENING WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION IF IT'S A NEW SWITCH YOU HAVE TO ADJUST IT TO GET IT TO SHUT OFF THE RIGHT WAY IF IT'S AN OLD ONE REPLACE IT BUT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED BEFORE AND THE FASTENERS LOSSENED AND MIGHT NEED TO BE ADJUSTED AGAIN AND TIGHTENED TO HOLD IT IN PLACE GOOD LUCK! I have a1990 toyotra 4x4 pickup replaced fuel line

Gas caps do fail. They need to vent under pressure and let in air to prevent your gas tank from collapsing. Try replacing first.

Why will the truck not keep running after start unless hold key

Possible cause is the key switch behind the key assembly is not set correctly. When you release the key after engine starts, the key bounces back to ON position but the key switch moves to a position where it did not connect the ignition supply lines.

Astrostart won't start the car

You may need to reset the system.

1. While engine is running (key in ignition switch), apply the brakes and hold the pedal down.
2. Move gearshift lever to neutral.
3. Apply the parking brake Once Twice
Note: The system can be set - at time of installation - to require that the parking brake be applied once or twice.
If set for two actuations, pause one second between the two.
4. Remove key from ignition (the system keeps the engine running).
5. Exit the vehicle.
6. Within 60 seconds, close all doors.
7. The system will stop the engine and blink the parking brakes once to confirm the sequence is valid (vehicle is
ready for a remote start command).
1. While engine is running (key in ignition switch), apply the brakes and hold the pedal down.
2. Move gearshift lever to neutral.
3. Apply parking brake.
4. Send the start command (Model 801 & 2101 - Model 903 ).
5. Remove key from ignition (the system keeps the engine running).
6. Exit the vehicle.
7. Using the remote, send the STOP command. The system will stop the engine and parking lights will blink once
to confirm that the sequence is valid (vehicle is ready for a remote start command).

I have a 2001 ford f 150 the anti theft is giving me trouble i try to start and it shuts right off if you place the key in the on position for about 30 sec all gauges power up then the truck will start and...

If the engine starts and runs, it is not the PATS holding things up. PATS is only prior to starting the engine, with the start enable parameter from the cluster. Once this is past, it is not longer involved in the process ( you can use a remote start with a correctly configured PATS bypass module, with a normal straight key to turn the truck to the on position.

Do you have an after market VSS installed ?

My car just stop running i tried to restart it and it would not stay started

try the ignition switch.. i am not sure try turning the key and keeping it in the turn over position... if it runs it is the ignition switch probably.. it means it is running of your starter.. you will have to hold the key there tho.. because it wont stay started if you dont hold it in the turn over... it can also mean key and tumbler... do you have gas in it??

My key to my Taurus is broken perfectly in half. My boyfriend and I keep the medal part of the key in the ignition and the other portion that holds the chip with us to use when we are ready to go some...

I would go with common sense on this one
Get a new key from a ford dealer
Go home and program it,you may not have an
owners manual,so have a tech do that when at the dealer
You will pay $25.00 for the key,so they should at least put it
in the ignition and cycle it on and off,to program

After you get a functioning key (need 2 keys min) you
listen for the trunk noise (most likely the fuel pump running)

Turning over and starting are confusing to most people

If the engine does not move (turn over) then, yes the key
may play a role,if it is tied to the PATS System (security system)

If the engine rotates (cranks) but does not start, you diagnose a
starting issue

That key thing would do me in. I'am like Monk on TV,I would be off for a
new key the instant it broke.

My truck will continue to try and start after its already running. It acts as if i am holding the key in the start position even after i remove the key and shut the engine off. It keeps winding.

Sounds like the bendix or selenoid for the starter has worn out.BUT,for the starter to run after you turn off the key, that's just spooky.I'd bring it to a good mech.
