Question about 1997 Buick Park Avenue

1 Answer

I think the alternator must be replaced on my buick park avenue. Is this a job that a shade tree mechanic can do? The inside lights have been dimming when I brake for about two weeks and yesterday, it just chugged to a stop at a car wash. I came back later and the guy with the cable said "look, its not your battery" then he tapped the ends together and got a big spark. I am assuming it is the alternator. Could it be something else? Should I look elsewhere for a power drain? I need help quickly, but cant do anything until the first (payday). Thank you for any kind responses. Beth

  • Go to Autozone. They can check the alternator while it is on the car.
  • Another thing you can do is start your car. while it is running remove the negative cable from the battery. If the car turns off then your alternator is bad.

Hood wont open on my 90 buick park ave

Cheapest solution - Skin out cable near hood release and tie the end to a piece of wood or plastic.

Next cheapest - go to Big Boys or some other parts supplier and buy a new cable and then start at the release inside the car and replace as you go.

Most expensive - take vehicle to mechanic.

My 1993 buick park avenue will not start but i have power. and it has the factory security system. it has and new starter and alternator... so just wondering what this could be

I would definately think its the security. Look for a light somewhere near the dash that says SECURITY. Thats a dead give away. I think on the park avenue its in the middle of the dash above the radio. Check out this site, it explains the whole SECURITY thing, why your car isnt starting, and solutions to fix it yourself for cheap.

2000 park avenue has no dash lights and no tail lights. Brake lights work tho. Spent over $500 so far on this, to no claims they ran a new wire between front and rear fuse panel, lights...

Take it back to them, don't let them guess what the problem is, hell a shade tree mechanic can do that, and don't pay them anymore money, fix it right. running a wire means there is a broken, shorted, grounded wire, for $500, I would be pissed.

Drivers side door handle on a 2000 buick park avenue will not work inside ok looks like a big job to take door panel off what do you think thank you

The door panel just snaps on except for the door arm rest, it has two screws on the bottom . Take out the screws and the panel should come off, the arm rest will stay on the door.

Replace alternator 97 buick park avenue my buick's interior lights have been dimming when I hit the brakes over the past couple of weeks. It had been getting harder to start, and still dim lights....

First checking a battery by jumping the posts is very dangerous and not ever recommended!! It does sound as if the alternator is going bad. It should be no trouble to change as long as he does it safely. First get the battery charged and then have the charging system checked. Don't just assume the alternator is bad, They are not cheap and you don't want to be in the habit of just replace a part and hope it fixes the problem, that method can be expensive. If the alternator is bad have your brother in law disconnect the battery before starting to do ant work. Disconnect the negative cable. then change the alternator taking note of the wire positions. This way you install the wires in the proper place. reinstall the alternator and adjust the belt be careful not to adjust it to tight for this will burn up the bearings in the alternator and the job will have to be redone. hook the battery back up and recheck the system. On some alternators when you biuy them there will be a pin in the back so if you have to turn the back so it is like the old one(for installing the wires). If you turn or don't have to remeber to pull out the pin before installing the new one. It will not work with the pin installed. Good Luck.

My battery be drained

I agree with you, it sounds like the alternator isn't charging the battery. Most parts stores offer free check of your charging system, with advice on what is wrong and what needs to be replaced (you should replace your mechanic along with your alternator.)
