I have a knocking sound around the belt drive case or the top of the engine and it smokes people have told me valves and clutch and piston idk what to do

dear user,
In some cases, gasoline problems cause the irregular combustion that leads to knocking sounds in an engine. This can occur because of problems with gasoline octane. Gasoline's octane ratings signifies the amount of compression the fuel can handle before spontaneous ignition. When this spontaneous ignition happens instead of the normal ignition, knocking may occur and can cause damage to the engine. The lowest octane gases are typically the least capable of withstanding compression and are more likely to ignite this way.
Sometimes the sound of engine knocking is caused by something other than the typical combustion process problems. For example, some types of mechanical issues may cause these knocking sounds. Such mechanical issues can include defects in the crankshaft bearings, broken flywheels, and water pump bearings that are worn out.

I have a 2000 volkswangen jetta vr6 and it has a knocking sound in the top engine need to know if changeing the oil will fix the problem oil look realy thin and smells like gas.

If your oil smells like petrol (gas) this is a big problem. Drain the oil and replace it and the filter. I would take a sample of the oil to a mechanic just to get his opinion. Gas getting into the oil on a modern car (fuel injected) is less common then just burning oil but has been known to happen. Knocking sound is usually crank shaft damage which is not a good prognosis. It is likely if fuel is in there now it will get in there again - Your best chances are to use as heavy weight semi-synthetic oil you can get with the aim that the oil pressure will mean you burn oil in preference to fuel pressure pushing its way into your sump.

My engine has a knocking sound

i'm sorry! does the engine dipstick for the oil,is it full? has it been run low on oil lately? is the knocking sound like a real hard knocking, thumping with like deep base sound?if so,do not start it again. you may have a bad crankshaft bearing,or a bad crank, broken crank. if it's a tapping sound, that's different. it could be low oil pressure, just like the lower knocking,it may be bad oil pump.my advice is this, lower knock from oil pan where you drain the oil,do not start! upper,on top of the engine, just change oil 1st add a fram oil filter,if in cold weather recommend 5w30weight oil,in summer,30weight castrol with fram oil filter.is your oil light on? if not, then it'not low on oil,but CHECK your oil on dipstick, just to be sure thank you for choosing fixya.com

The engine is making a really loud knocking noise and the oil light is on. it also smells like something is burning or running hot

Doesn't sound good. Check oil level. Also check for metal in the oil once you pull the dipstick. A loud knocking noise is a sign of a blown engine may be you spun a rod in which case you would need engine replacement or rebuild

Recentley when I start my 2004 chevy silverado truck, it knocks and blows smoke for a few moments, then it runs fine. I have had the vehicle for 6 months.

It sounds like you have a seal problem and that is when you stop over night and the oil up top runs down past the valve seals and when you start it has adrop of oil going onto the piston,s and it burns that oil and also makes the compression a lot higher than it should be ,,causing the knocking and as soon as the oil burns up the noise stops.
