Question about 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser

I removed thermostat to allow radiator cleaner to circulate system. However after driving for 10 minutes the temp gauge reaches the red mark,what could be wrong Thanks PaUL

    How many miles on the engine/radiator? Could be the sludge removed by the cleaner has reduced circulation in the radiator. Charlie

The reason it is still reaching the redmark is because without the thermostat in the vehicle it does not give the water in the radiator time to cool down before it is sent back to the engine. Reinstall the thermostat and refill the system. If the vehicle still overheats the water pump is probably bad and not circulating the water appropriately. Also make sure the fan clutch is working correctly, You can spin the fan blade and is should not go more than 3/4 of a turn before stopping, If it spins more than one or two complete turns you might want to replace it.

I have a 02 Grand caravan that has new radiator, termostat, one new fan. the temp gauge goes up to max hot the drops right back down in seconds. what could be the problem?


it could be you have an air lock in the cooling system
remove the rad cap from the rad, start the engine and let it run until the coolant drops (add to fill it back up) or until the coolant boils out of the rad spout.

maybe pull the heat sensor. -replace it OR clean it off, reinstall it.

Hi

Your engine thermostat is stuck open and this is what is causing the problem. You will need to have a new thermostat fitted - Usual cost is between $15 to $30. Maybe less depending on thermostat type.

How the thermostat works is it remains in a closed position within the engines coolant circulating system to allow the engine to heat and reach its optimum operating temperature. The thermostat then opens to allow the coolant to circulate freely. When the thermostat becomes faulty it fails to respond to the temperature of the coolant. What has happened it that it has opened and is stuck in an open position allowing the water to circulate too freely around the engine - you will see a brief rise in temperature when the engine is worked hard but as soon as you come to rest the temperature falls back again as the thermostat is not closing when it should.

Solution - replace thermostat and all will be well!

My 1991 Chevy Cavalier has just turned 100, 500 miles and has started acting up, went to ck my antifreeze and when i took the radiator cap off ( car is started) the antifreeze in the car was just sitting...


It does not circulate until the engine is warm. At that point the thermostat(cooling valve) opens allowing the coolant , from the radiator ,to circulate into the engine. Before that point only the coolant already in the engine circulates, inside the engine alone. .

I have a 2002 325i BMW with 85K miles. It's had temp gauge problems for quite a while but until recently had no signs of real overheating. (I drive her only rarely though).The gauge would stay...


To verify if cooling system damage exists.
Drain the engine coolant.
Remove the intake manifold.
Remove the plastic heater core feed pipe.(located under the intake manifold).
If the coolant pipe cannot be removed after removing securing hardware, the VANOS banjo bolt must also be removed thus allowing additional clearance needed to remove the pipe.
Visually inspect the front (inside) of the coolant pipe.
If the plastic on the inside of the coolant pipe shows no signs of deterioration (smooth surface) the engine should be reassembled using new gaskets and O rings where necessary.
If the plastic on the inside of the coolant pipe shows signs of deteriorated (worn away, bubbling, ect) this is an indication that the engine has been severely overheated and these components must be replaced.....Cylinder head gasket,all coolant hoses,all plastic coolant pipes,coolant expansion tank and cap, radiator, water pump, thermostat, oil and filter....

Heater donot get hot whil running


It could be a plugged heater core or heater control problem. I assume the blower is working, but the air is cold. The first thing to check is the coolant level, make sure there is coolant in the resivoir. Next see if the temerature gauge reaches the normal operating temperature range. If the gauge reads cold most of the time, it would tell you that the thermsotat is faulty and not allowing the engine to reach full operating temperature. If your car doesn't have a temp gauge, the blue cold engine light might stay on for an extended period of time. The thermostat is supposed to not allow coolant flow in the radiator until the engine reaches operating temperature. If you drive the car for a couple of minutes, from cold start, the radiator or upper hose should be cool until the engine reaches operating temp.

I have a 2003 chevy impala. just changed the thermastat because the temperature was fluxuating. Since changing the thermastat the temperature gage constantly read in the red, however the coolant level...


You probably need to bleed the cooling system properly.

Open the cooling system bleeder screws.

Slowly fill the cooling system with a 50/50 coolant mixture until coolant runs freely out of bleeder screws.
Close the cooling system bleeder screws
Install the coolant pressure cap
Start the engine.
Run the engine at 2,000 - 2,500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. (midway on gauge)
Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes.
Shut the engine off.
Allow the engine to completely cool.
Top off the coolant as necessary.
Run engine again at 2000 - 2500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
Allow engine to idle until cooling fans come on. It should come on with the gauge about 3/4 of the way to red. - if it gets to where is touches the red, shut down immediately.
When the fan comes on, put your hand behind the fan and observe the temperature of the air coming from the fan. It should feel hot. If it is blowing cold air, the coolant is not circulating through the radiator like it should. This could be caused by lots of things including an improper/defective thermostat, corroded water pump impeller, or a blown head gasket.

Many cars have a bleeder valve to let out air pocket from the cooling system. Fill the radiator, with the cap off, let it idle at about 1500-2000 rpm's until it reaches normal operating temp. on the gauge, then the thermostat will open allowing the coolant to circulate throughout the engine and radiator. any air will then be gone after about 10 minutes at a fast idle. Top off the coolant, replace cap and recheck the level after a short drive of a few miles and has time to cool.
If there is enough trapped air in the system, you will have no heat. The heater box loves to trap a lot of air in it as its like a tiny radiator itself.

did u use oem thermostat or at local auto parts? if oem u ok,did put back the plug on temp sensor?did u burp the water line after you change thermostat?

Coolant system


Hello there,

Either an air bubble, the thermostat or the water pump.
  • Air bubble (pocket) - Just because the radiator is full, doesn't mean the engine is. When an air bubble circulates through an engine it will cause the temp gauge to swing from hot (when water is in contact with the sensor) to cold ( when air is in contact). The less water, the hotter the engine. Easiest fix - add water.
  • Thermostat - Keeps water circulating in the engine separate from the water in the radiator until it gets to a certain temperature. At that point, it opens and allows the hot engine water and the cooler radiator water to cycle. Hot to radiator, cool to engine. As the cooler water flows over the thermostat, it closes, allowing the cycle to repeat. If it opens at the wrong temp, or not at all, your engine will overheat. Water will begin to boil. Steam will make the temp gauge swing erratically.
  • Water pump - If the water pump is failing (sometimes the impeller will come of the shaft), the water will not circulate. Same results.
Troubleshoot:
  • First and foremost: BE SAFE!!! Wear safety glasses. Start this with the engine cool. When you look in the radiator, do it from an angle and as far away as possible.
  • Have a hose or a couple two liter bottles full of water.
  • Take off the radiator cap. (Do not take off if engine is hot)
  • Is the water level low? If so, top it off.
  • Make sure the transmission is in either PARK or Neutral and set the parking brake.
  • Start the engine.
  • Observe the water level in the radiator. If it drops, top it off again.
  • At first it should do nothing. The water in the engine is still cool. The thermostat is closed. As the water in the engine heats up, the thermostat will begin to open. When it does, you will notice the water level begin to surge up and down.
  • Check your temp gauge. If the gauge getting close to the 'Red Zone', the thermostat should have begun cycling before now. Go back to the radiator and check it.
  • When (if) the thermostat finally opens all the way, the water will start moving as it cycles through the system. You will be able to tell the difference.
  • If you see the water flowing, the water pump is ok.
  • If the water does not start to move and the gauge is getting close to 'Red', shut the engine down and let it cool. Do not put your face near the radiator. If the thermostat suddenly let go, The hot water, driven by steam, could erupt out of the filler hole. Replace thermostat. Rerun this test. If results are the same, replace water pump.
  • Does the water level drop at this point (air bubble)? If so, top it off while it's circulating. Adding cold water will close the thermostat. Be prepared to wait through the cycling two or three times.
  • Check the temp gauge again. Has it leveled off?
  • When you don't need to add water any more, put the cap back on. Observe the temp gauge for a few more minutes. has it stopped the erratic behavior? If so, it was an air bubble and it's gone. If not, replace the thermostat.
