Dead battery, used jumpers. Lights work dashboard lights up. Motor will not turn over

If the battery is very dead, it can take a while for the dead battery to regain enough charge to start. If you are jump starting from a jump box and not a running vehicle, there may not be enough power available to get the charge to a level that can start the vehicle. Hook up the jumpers cable to a running vehicle and allow 10-20 minutes for the battery to gain some charge. Monitor both batteries carefully during this time and should any unusual amount of heat or if smoke starts to come from either battery, shut everything down and disconnect as quickly (and safely) as possible.

SE. Why won't it turn over?

if the battery light came on than there is a good chance the alternator has stopped working. If you can get it started again with either a jump start, charging the battery, or replacing the battery, check the voltage at the battery. You should see more than 14 volts. if there is less than 12 volts a new alternator should resolve the issue.

Jumpstart 1995 oldsmobile aurora

I'm not sure if the Aurora is a special type of car that requires a different way of jumping, but when u jump start most cars, you place the red end of the jumper cables on the positive/ red side of the battery and the black end on the negative. You want to make sure the jumper clamps are touching the metal part of the battery post (so if there's covers on the battery posts, move them so the cables have good connection. The same procedure is used on both cars. Be careful not to touch the end of the cables together, as doing so will make them spark if one end is connected to the running vehicle. Let your car charge a minute then try to start. If it starts, let it charge for 5-10 minutes and run/ drive your car after disconnecting to make sure the battery does not die the next time you shut it off. If it does not start after a few minutes of charging, adjust the clamps to make sure they have a good connection, wait 2-5 minutes longer & try to start your car again. *It is normal to hear the car that is jumping you idle more quietly when your car starts pulling juice from the charged battery. Also, remove jumper cables after charging, making sure not to touch the ends togther- as it will spark again. *it is not necessary to shut off the car that's jumping you before attatching the cables, or after charging. If your car still doesn't start after repeatedly adjusting cables and trying other cables to see if it is the cables not working, you may need a new battery or alternator. I would have the battery tested to see if you need a new battery before considerring the altinator.

I have a 2004 Chrysler Sebring Coupe Limited. I drove mi car around in town. When we shut it off and come out the store it won't start. We had to get a jump twice. Towards the evening we shut our car...

Replace the battery first! That acid will corrode everything it touches. Once the battery is replaced, you can test if the alternator is working properly.

Check that the battery connections and clean and tight. Check to dee if the connections on the starter and clean and tight also. If all this is good then remove the starter and have it checked.

Cars electrical system goes completly offline, nothing will illuminate or work until I disconnect the battery. When I turn the key to start the car everything shuts down again. Has anyone heard of this...

It sounds like a Body ground problem or a shorted Battery. Try using jumper cables and connect the NEG jumper cable to a body part on the Firewall. Then see if the lights and accessories work. You can leave the Battery cables in place. If the lights work, see if the car starts.

Dirty Battery cables can also cause this problem. So can a shorted Battery, though I would think a lightbulb would work with even a shorted Battery. Everytime you disconnect the Battery you are making a new connection when you reconnect the cables. The ends should be shiny not black.

You can eliminate the shorted Battery by disconnecting your Battery cables and use the jumper cables to bypass the Battery and use another vehicle to run yours via the jumper cables. They you will know if the Battery is shorted.

Autozone and Oreillys do free tests on Batteries and will scan your car for free if you can get it there.

Take off jumper cables it dies

You're alternator is dead. Once started the alternator should generate enough power by itself to keep the engine running.

Car sat for 18 months, the battery died so i replaced it, after this the radio didn't work (maybe when i replaced it i shorted something out?) it ran for a while, but when it was driven at night the airbag...

All of these are signs of a dying battery, because it's not recharged by the alternator.
Test the alternator this way: jump the battery from a running car and start your engine; rev the engine to about 2500 rpm and disconnect the jumpers; test the voltage - on a working alternator it should read 14 to 14.5 volts; if it shows 12 volts or less then the alternator is totally dead.
