Question about 1998 Ford Taurus

Oil light came on and there was a moaning tapping noise....... then the check engine light came on... then there was only a slight tapping sound... i added a qt of oil and tried to drive the car home and the engine stopped. the commputor check on the engine said the crank angle sensor was bad along with the egnition sensor. If it is only sensors where did the noise come from?

Was the oil low before you added any? What computer check? You went to a shop to have it scanned? Have the code issues repaired first then move on to the noise issues. Not a very new car I hope your not the original owner because you should not have these problems if you maintained it over the years and don't have 250,000 miles on it. If that's the case get rid of it

Hi There CITM,

It's unlikely it was only the sensors. The noises were probably the result of running the engine while low on oil.

How low was the oil before you added the quart?

Did the level register on the dip stick?

Did the engine over heat?

Does it turn over when you try to start it?

There are so many possibilities. The more detailed a description, the better we are able to provide help. So please comment back with the answers, and anything else that you noticed or happened recently

HI tapping noise came from lack of lubrication to the lifters and crank possible engine damage.

Slight tapping noise from engine when accelerating when engine is warm.Started about 3 days ago but hasnt got any worse.Doesnt do it when cold.

tap usually associated with lifters when vehicle warms up oil thins out and a bad or worn lifter will make a tapping noise --other oil level low --oil needs changing --low level will starve rockers/push rods/and lifters which will also cause tap ---damaged /dirty{sludge oil can cause same problems

Checked oil. it was 1 to 2 quarts low. no idea for how long. seems as though the top of the engine makes a slight tap or clacking sound when accelerating. what is the least that the problem could be. and...

It sounds like bearing noise to me. you ran it to low on oil and ran a bearing dry. you can try a thicker oil. if it doesnt go away your gonna need a motor job.

Tapping Sound from 2004 GC 4.7l Engine

If the tapping noise speeds up with the speed of the engine, it's a worn valve lifter.
If the service light is on, change oil and filter, if tapping is still there, the lifter is the culprit.

I have a light ticking sound in the engine. Could

hi, to me it sounds like lifter problem if it was a bottom end problem then the noise would be their all the time as this is always surrounded by oil so im thinking lifter as it takes few minutes for the oil to work to the top of the engine correctly.

What you could try is go out and buy some good quality high millage oil this is thicker and protects high millage engines from any oil seal problems and stops any slight tapping noise you hear from the hydraulic lifters. So give that a try first and see how you get on failing that it would be a case of replacing the lifters.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

91 previa LE, 205K miles. diving Tucson to St George, UT, 800 pound load. After 3 hours at 65-75 mph, had to slow down as engine was struggling to keep up speed. Stop for gas, and engine was "tapping"...

It is probably a oil pressure problem. If there is some sort of small blockage in an oil journal it could stop oil from flowing to the lifters which would cause the the tapping noise. at this point the best thing to do would be to try and flush out the engine with some sort of desludging agent. One thing i usualy do is drain the oil and re-fill it with atf and run it for about half an hour or an hour and then re-drain and replace with normal engine oil. transmission fluid contains tonnes of detergents and should help clean out any blockages.

MOTOR HAS TAPPING NOISE AND SLIGHT LOSS OF POWER..

more than lickey you need to have a new oil pump or oil sending unit installed. the tapping is due to not enouph oil to either the top of the engine or the bottom of the engine. if you do not have enouph oil pressure it will cause you to have low compresion and you need the compresion to move..... if you have some but not enouph compression than you will loose power trying to take off in fast paced traffic or up a hill and from a stop light....

MOTOR HAS ENGINE NOISE (TAPPING) AND SLIGHT POWER LOSS.

have your oil pump and oil sending unit checked....
the noise you are hearing is going to be from the engine not having enouph oil to either the top or the bottom of the engine.
If you do not have enouph oil getting to either part of the engine than you will loose compression and compression makes you move. i would start there
