If the unit overheated and there was no coolant flowing into the reserve tank, then there is two possible issues that must be addressed immediately. Either (1) There was not enough coolant in the system. This is because when the coolant heats up it expands and will go to the reserve tank. The fact that there was going to the tank indicates that the system is less than full, or (2) The radiator pressure cap is defective.

I would flush the cooling system, clean the reserve tank, replace the radiator cap, and refill the system and retest.

Refilling radiator

Before you add coolant always make sure that the engine is cool never add coolant to a hot engine.Next remove the radiator cap and fill it to the top with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. After you have filled the radiator with the coolant water mixture put the radiator cap back on and then fill the reserve tank to the cold level mark on the side of the bottle

What is the coolent reserve tank for???? IF broke does it need to be fixed immedatley? Mine is busted and I was wondering if my car is going to overheat now. THANKS

The coolant reserve tank is a medium for the radiator to breathe. Water passes from the radiator to the coolant reserve tank and fort.

The car might not necessarily over-heat if the coolant reserve tank is broken, but it is advisable that you replace it to enable it serve its purpose within the operations of the car engine.

Good luck.

Why is all the fluid staying in reserve tank-none

The line to the reserve tank to the radiator could be plugged up or you have a loose radiator cap or a bad seal causing the tank to hold whats in it. The coolant system is a pressurized system and if a seal is bad or a line is plugged you will experience this problem for the pressure is not there to take whats needed from the tank to deploy in the coolant system

YES. But dont overfill it. Slowly add coolant to the low full line and let it run a while, like 10 minutes. if the level goes down fill it to the full line. After it cools for 30 minutes recheck the level and add as needed.

check the condition of the reserve tank and the hose from the reserve tank to the radiator for leaks if no leaks there have the Radiator cap presure tested . also this could be a air lock in the engine if the radiator is new with the engine running and the heater on hot observe the fluid level in the radiator with the cap off if it drops as it warms add more coolant this will purge the air .

Radiator pressure cap on 2001 Grand Am GT

If it is on the reserve tank not the radiator. then there should be a air vent on it somewhere. it might even be a hose coming from the top of the tank. Make sure that it is not plugged. When your car gets hot it overflows the water in the radiator in to the reserve tank, as it cools it sucks it back. if you don't have a vent opening then it is like taking air out of a milk carton with the lid on. If it is the cap on the radiator then you might have air in the hose or engine.
