There is a screw-in plug about half-way up the rear center section on either the cover plate, or on either side. When the plug is taken out, stick a finger into the hole and crook the end down (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch), then remove it from the hole and look at the end of the finger. It should have some oil covering it (not just a smear). If nothing, go to a lube shop and have them top it up. You can do this yourself, but it requires a pump and a bottle of differential oil. Some bottles come with a long spigot which eliminates the pump requirement. If topping the oil up doesn't stop the noise, then the rear end probably needs some bearings or gears. It may be cheaper to find another rear end from a wrecking yard than to repair this one.

I'll put my money on something like brakes. They can be loud enough to hear at those speeds. Also just remove the rear axle cover and change the fluid if its never been done. Don't forget that locking diff additive if you have one. Level plug on cover of most or housing fill plug on some

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport (approx 178,000 miles) When first starting engine liquid drips out from tailpipe. Never notice this before. Doesn't appear to last long, after I have driven it around for 15...

Your liquid is most likely built up condensation from the last run. It is very common to have this on start up. If it last a long time and is white and cloud like in shape and color then you have coolant leaking into the combustion chamber.

Life expentancy of 1996 grand jeep cherokee engine

If the engine doesnt smoke to much and if you dont have to add much oil between oil changes and you cant hear any unusal noises from the engine you should be able to run that car for many more miles. My dad has a 92 Jeep Cherokee and he over 300,000 miles on it and it still goes as long as you take care of it with regular oil changes you should have no problems
