Key wont turn in ignition barrel on my bmw 316 compact (N REG)

I cant switch the engine off as the barrel seems locked on in the on position. i have disconnected the wiring switch at the opposite end of the barrel, that way i can turn the engine off using a screwdriver, but i must have the key inserted in the ignition barrel to switch the car on with the screwdriver.
The engine runs even when i take the key out of the ignition.

Had this problem myself recently and i had to remove steering wheel and side covers remove shear bolts from lock housing using a smal chisel that lets you lake of lock housing and steering lock to replace them your local bm dealer should be able to order the correct one to fit your key, your car will still run with key out but you have to insert it to start it.

I have a bmw 316i compact and my key will not turn the ignition no more any answers

Hi

Very common fault, is the key just spinning around? if so the ignition barrel is hot so you will need a new one, if you dont have time right now to fix it then turn tha car off turn the steering all the way right then put the key in the ignition while also turning full steering lock right, this often gives the barrel switch some grip and you can start the car.

Do you need more specific information on how to repair this yourself?

If so do get back to me and I will tell you how.

Regards

Dan

My bmw 316i model 1997 has problem releasing the steering lock mechanism. Key also battles to staert car.

order a new ignition barrel from your local BMW agent before your lock packs up all together and you will have an even bigger problem, to remove your barrell turn your key to the first position then insert a 1.2mm rod or drill down the little hole in the edge of the chrome key slot to push down the detent that hold the barrell in, pulll out old barrell with the key then fit new one.

2000 v reg bmw 316 drivers door lock wont open with a key

problem here can arise through the car always being locked / unlocked with remote, the actual barrel in the lock can sieze up, worst scenario is to replace the lock barrel, your local bmw dealer should be able to order you one which will fit your key (if it is original one ) you may need to show your v5 and take photograhpic id proof with you!

Hi. i have just replaced a barrel on a bmw 316i auto n reg. this barrel i bought second-h. it also came with this box,now this is were i need some assistance.this box has the letters [ews 11]and 61.35-8...

Im presuming you are talking about the wires which come from the switch unit at the side of the switch housing, if you took the old one off it should be easy, if you didnt look to the side of the steering column and look for an empty socket your plug wont go into the wrong socket, remember you have to refit the ring round the replacement ignition lock as this "reads" the information on your key and allows you to start the engine

I nned to know how to set up bluetooth in my car. it has all the functions on the steering wheel but I dont know how to set it all up . I also cannot find my manual !

You need to have the Bluetooth code (a four digit number that should be with your vehicle documents)
- Turn Bluetooth at your phone.
- With the car ignition key at Position 0 (Off), pressand hold the phone key on your steering wheel.
- Whilst still holding the phone key down, turn the ignition key to position 1.
- release the phone key after about 3 seconds.
- The car display should then show "BLUETOOTH PAIRING" or similar.
- Search for new bluetooth devices with your phone.
- When the BMW unit is detected, select and enter the 4 digit PIN.
- Your phone should now work via the cars Bluetooth interface
