I have cleaned the throttle body.Listening to the erratic sound of the fuel pump could it possibly be on its way out?
    Where is the IAC located?

Just listening to all possible solutions before throwing money at what "might" be the problem. Thanks for all comments.

Check engine light not on. Auto Zone ran the codes and no error messages came up.

Thanks. I have used injector cleaner and changed the fuel filter. The problem is so intermittent. It ran for weeks with no problems. The injector cleaner seemed to help but too intermittent to know for sure.

This seems to make more sense to me than other solutions. Where is the MAP sensor located?

  • Robert Inkenbrandt Sep 26, 2009

I have about 5 things I can start throwing money at. Wish I had a definitive diagnosis but that is what "auto mechanics" is all about!! Thanks everyone!

  • Robert Inkenbrandt Sep 26, 2009

I think this is a fuel pump issue but you are the first to concur. Thanks!

Well I threw money at a new fuel pump and fuel filter. Still stalling! Guess i'll try replacing the IAC next.

Please you need to replace your fuel pump and fuel filter.

Also you might have to see that the transmission is not short of oil.

Opt for a scan on the car too.

Good luck.

Hi,
I would suspect this is either a MAP sensor problem (measures manifold air pressure) - and tells the ECU when power demand increases, or it is the servo that controls airflow into the manifold that is siezing. One controls the other - so both need checking.
The cheapest option is to buy a second hand unit and swap it. If there is no change - sell that part again.

This seems to be common on vehicles aproaching 10 years.

This sound as the full sensor is going out? do you have check engine light on? Can you go to AutoZone and ask them for computer tester connect the tester after programming your car data and see if that will give you a number so we can work on it, let me know if that work if not we go to the next step Please see that grant me your approvals by rating my service and I hope that I can serve you again the future. I will work with you in this issue to conclusion

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The stalling of Mazda Tribute might be due to fuel air mixture issue when cold. It is equipped with electronic fuel injection which utilizes a number of sensors to detect engine temp, outside temp, humidity and air pressure. On a cold start, the sensors provide more fuel and less air, until the engine warms. The issue might be with the sensor itself or the ECM that decide what fuel/air mixture is required for the Mazda Tribute. Please also check the intake gaskets as they might have got frail and vacuum leaks by them and replace if required. It is always recommended to check fuel injectors, intake gaskets and sensor before you go for change of ECM which is the costly part.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Two possible problems that I could think of:

1. IAC (Idle Air Control)
2. Torque Converter.

But you may need to try cleaning the throttle body. To do this:

Remove the intake snorkel and hold the throttle wide open. Take an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner and scrub the backside of the throttle plate and the surrounding housing. That should help stabilize the idle. If this doesn't do the trick, replace the IAC.

After that, then have a mechanic check the torque converter.

Have a great day!

Why does the engine revs drop too low and sometimes stalling when I engage any gear?

This can be either an engine management issue (bad idle air control) or a transmission issue if an automatic trans (torque converter lock up problem). Idle air control can often be cleaned so = cheap fix. Trans problem not so easy.

You'll need to change the distributor, as the distributor shaft oil seal has gone bad. Without sufficient spark, you'll have no power. Don't forget a new cap/rotor.

My nissan 350z sometimes stalls after starting

after i replaced the battery in my 2003 350z, it would stall immediatly after i cranked it on unless i gave it a little gas. I fixed this by cleaning the MAF and throtle body valve. Total supply costs were $15 and took about 20 minutes. My Z is not only fixed but runs smoother and cleaner.
