Question about 1992 Volvo 240

2 Answers

Volvo 240 GL Wagon, 1986

Year: 1986
Mileage: 230,000
Repairs/maintenance in the last 3 months: new muffler, oil change, brake job.

Problem: Idles hard, engine shakes, OK if idled high, press accelerator when in drive and engine stutters and accelerates but stutters again.

First noticed: Drove it in hot weather in stop-and-go traffic for 30 mins, then normal speed traffic for another 30 mins, parked the car, and tried to start it in the evening (no longer hot, cool ambient temp). Car was idling hard, difficult to start at first.

Actions: Looked for loose hoses or connections in engine but none spotted. No fluids leaking. Gas tank was full.

NOTE: During the second 30 minute drive -- toward the end -- I heard a sound coming from engine, as if wheel had kicked something into the wheel well. No sounds or problems following.

Sounds like there is a problem with one or more of the following systems -

Vacuum lines or manifold leak
EVAP system leaking or blocked
Fuel system filter dirty
Internal and/or External fuel pump malfunction
fuel injectors dirty / corroded electrical connectors
idle control system malfunction
Ignition base timing / timing advance control malfunction
O2 sensor malfunction

My reccomendation? Tune it up, put BG 44K through the fuel system, replace the fuel filter, clean and ispect all wiring, set the base timing, and then inspect for vacuum leaks. hope this helps you.

How Do I change the clutch on a 1986 240 Volvo station wagon?

You do not need a simple "solution" from an online forum. What you need is detailed service information. I would recommend spending the small fee (under $30/year) and subscribing to the service information for your vehicle at alldatadiy.com. There. you will find step-by-step instructions along with diagrams and lists of any special tools needed to complete the task.

I would like to rebuild the front disk brake calipers as one of mine is sticking[wont release properly.my volvo is a 1984/5 240 gl turbo wagon engine b230e with solid rotors

suprisingly, these are still available new, from volvo,as rebuilding them is NOT reccommended(unless you have specialist tools)you could get "exchange" units from a specialist supplier.(in the UK)chances are the pistons are rusted causing them to stick, you may be able to polish them up?

Is it worth to keep my 1990 Toyota Corrola if THE MILEAGE IS 99,560 miles as of today. I have just get oil change and minor maintenance last saturday, 11/13/10 and spent $650 for new starter last 3/10/10...

The easiest way to figure out if it is worth keeping is to add up the cost of repairs for last year. Do not add oil changes, tires, gas or brakes because these need to be done on a new car as well as an old car. When you have a total for repairs for the year divide that number by 12. This is what it costs you to drive your car. If this is less than the monthly payments on a new car then keep the old car. Hope this helps.

1984 volvo 240 gl wagon engine failure

The clicking you hear is probably the fuel relay. You should pull it and have it tested. If you have time to wait for delivery, order a new one if the old one is bad from IPDUSA.com. They are much cheaper than the dealer, even with shipping charges. Or, go to to a pick and pull yard and find one that will work. To get to the fuel relay, pull the glove box and follow the noise.
