Question about 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

I need someone to tell me how to take off the gear shift nob for my 2000 VW Beetle,so I can replace the old leather sheathing in the gear shift. I thought the nob would simply screw off but it does not. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for responding. I pulled up the leather skirt but do I unscrew a screw or simply unscrew the gear knob. I see a "clamp like" fitting. Thanks for your help.

Hi again-I have flipped the leather like sheathing up over the boot, and I see a brass /copper-like fitting and a white plastic fitting, and then I see another black cover. I do not know what I unscrew here to be able to take the shift nob, and sheathing off. I do not want to break anything. What to I unscrew or loosen?

Thanks-I did not get the knob off but thanks for your help. I had to post another thing before I took my Beetle into the VW dealership on Tuesday.

The boot has to be popped up and pulled up first from around the base of the shifter and then that will allow you to un screw the shift knob from shaft. the boot and shift knob comes off as one.

let me know if you have trouble. good luck

a code is stored. you will need to clear the code in order to get it to shift but as soon as the PCM sees the problem again it will have this same issue. You need to get this diagnosed before you end up far from home when this happens again.

You don't have the proper key. The flip key assembly has a chip in it that lets the car keep running. Use old key assembly. To test put the old ket fob next to the ignition switch and see if it keeps running,

I found the same problem with mine after taking it to the dealer ship for a factory recall. It was shifting good but when they finish the recalls it won't shift at all. After auguring with them they finally put the code reader on it and found they lost the values of the transmission to shift. The machanic reset it and it's now back to normal.
