Question about 1998 Dodge Caravan

Needs front and rear brakes plus front calipers and rear cylinders. just curious how expensive this would be to have done professionallly.

The master cylinder. What you have is something that is pressurizing the front brake circuit but not the rear. The only possibilities would be the Master Cylinder or a proportioning valve.

Replaced all brake lines, rear wheel cylinders, front calipers. No fluid to rear brakes, no fluid to master cylinder bleeder. Fluid is in front brakes. How to resolve? Thank you


It sounds as though where the rear brake lines meet up with the master cylinder; there is probably a piece of dirt in the lines that could be blocking any fluid from getting in. To test this, I would remove the brake lines from the master cylinder and then remove the master cylinder. Once done, have the master cylinder cleaned inside out. This will remove the dirt particles that are clogging your lines.

Good question, on the antilock system is a bleader too and bleade it the same way you bleade the caliper. After all is done adjust the rear brakes, they should have a drag to them.

Hello: You nare going to have to replace/rebuild front calipers, replace Both rubber hoses that go fron the frame to the calipers. You may have to replace the rubber hoses in the rear and the rear wheel cylinders. Contaminated brake fluid creates a expensive and long repair.

To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Front wheel
    • Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads
      and the 4 anti-squeal shims

To Install:

CAUTION
Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the
vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons
on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or
replacement of the brake caliper.


  1. Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
  3. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
  4. Install or connect the following:

    • Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads
      NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced
      together with the pads.

    • 2 brake pads
    • Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
    • Clip
    • Front wheel

  5. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  6. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Rear
To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Rear wheel

    • 2 cylinder slide pins from rear caliper assembly
    • Caliper assembly from rear caliper mounting
    • 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shims from rear caliper mounting
    • 2 anti-squeal shims from each disc brake pads
    • Pad wear indicator plate from the inner side disc brake pad
    • 4 pad support plates from the rear caliper mounting

To Install:


  1. Install or connect the following:

    • 4 pad support plates on the rear caliper mounting
    • Pad wear indicator plate on the inside brake pad
      Note: Install the pad wear indicator facing downward.

    • Anti-squeal shims on each brake pad
    • 2 disc brake pads with anti-squeal shims to the caliper assembly

  2. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the sliding part of 2 caliper slide
    pins.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    • Disc brake caliper assembly with 2 caliper slide pins
    • Torque to 65 ft-lbs (88 Nm)
    • Rear wheel

  4. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  5. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Front wheel
    • Front brake caliper assembly

  3. Make matchmarks on the disc and the axle hub.
  4. Remove the front disc.

To Install:


  1. Align matchmarks and disc onto axle hub.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    • Front brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts

      1. Torque to 90 ft-lbs (123 Nm)

    • Front wheel

The wheel locked up when i was driving i smelled something burning


Was this a front or rear wheel? Did it make any unusual noise prior to the problem? If front, you could have a brake caliper that is sticking which would cause the brake to stay "on" and overheat the brakes or you could have a wheel bearing that has failed and is locked up but they usually make some noise before they fail. If rear, then usually it is brake related...again a caliper or wheel cylinder could be the culprit. It's not often that a rear bearing fails but that is possible.
If you have a brake caliper that has gone bad then I would suggest replacment of both calipers, brake pads, and flushing out the old brake fluid so you'll have good calipers and clean fluid when you are done.

2006 mercury mailn rear breakpad replacment.I can't compress the breakcillender piston so that the calaper will acept the new pads


Greetings Milan Owner:
You need a C clamp you can pick up any auto parts store or hardware store and must position it to the front center of the piston with piece of wood accross the front piston and rear center of the caliper and turn the screw by its handle until the rubber part of the piston receeds even with caliper. Once even with the caliper you can put the pads on and slide the caliper on to the rotor. You can also carefully with the right wrench or socket open up the valve on the caliper and let some brake fluid out (very little). This will make it easier for the piston to receed into the caliper with a little help from you using a piece of wood to push it in. Using the second option you will definitely have to bleed your brakes to get a hard brake pedal in the car. Do not forget to add more fluid back to the master cylinder. Good Luck[

I had a similar problem with the front disc brakes .... had to replace the calipers. In high corrosive conditions the pistons on the calipers can become contaminated and not operate smoothly ... they stick. The same thing can happen to the wheel cylinders on the rear. Try replacing the wheel cylinders on the rear (fairly cheep fix) and if that fixes them then the calipers would be next. Jim
