How do I replace the rear axle assembly in a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis?

If you have air suspension, turn it off from the trunk. Put car on hoist and support rear axle. Make sure you support the axel well so the coil springs do not injure you when you remove the shocks and etc. Remove brake lines from brakes. Remove emergency brake cable from brakes. Remove sway bar link bolts to frame. Remove the bolts that hold axle to rear control arms. Remove rear shocks. ( these are a real pain ) Axle assembly can now be removed.

You must remove the rear cover on the differential and then the spider gears, then the center pin bolt and the pin then push in on the axle and remove C clip retainer inside the gear carrier and slide axle out.

89 nissan sentra axle going in and out of transmission when i had it up on a lift & engaged. What hold that in?

The axle (called a "Half shaft" in front wheel drive cars) is held in by a internal round Snap Ring, either this snap ring is damaged or the axle is badly worn or the groove the round snap ring expands into is worn and not retaining the axle. Replace the 1/2 shaft first, it the problem persists you will need to replace the transmission side case casting

Yes it is as easy as it looks. If you had the tire off and figured out that it looks easy, you shouldn't have much problem.

Disasemble an axle from the transmission

The front drive-axles on your sentra are held in my circlips. Once you have the axle loose from the steering knuckle, you can get a big flat blade screwdriver between the inner CV joint and the transaxle housing and give the screwdriver a shot with a hammer or your palm and they will pop out of the transaxle. Use a lubricant (I use Sil-Glyde, but you can also use Vaseline) on the circlip when reinstalling. Push the stub with splines into the hole it was removed from and twist it to make sure that the splines are engaged and push the outer CV joint (where the axle nut threads are) toward the transaxle. You may need to tap with a rubber mallet to get the circlip to compress allowing the axle to go into the spider gear. If you don't have a rubber mallet, put the axle nut on the axle so that it is flush with the end of the threaded protion of the outer stub. This will help prevent damage to the threads.

Hope this is helpful!
