Question about 1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT

2 Answers

I have a 3000GT VR4 from 1997. A month ago I had almost no oil in the car, way before due oil change. Yesterday, white smoke was coming out of the exhaust. One mechanic told me last week that I need a Drive Shaft Carrier and a Bearing, Top engine mount. Today, I hear from another mechanic (after the white smoke), that one of the Turbo's is leaking. Oh, two weeks ago Mitsubishi replaced the Rear Springs and Struts, and said the car was fine otherwise. I feel so overwhelmed. I wished I could speak to a "live person" on the phone. Maria Gelat

Hi Maria,

Does the white smoke occur at start up then go away?
Was it cooler out the night before the white smoke started?

Likely it's condensation burning off.

To be on the safe side have a compression test run on all cylinders. It's a quick, easy and cheap way to find out if the head gasket is ok.

Also, I strongly advise you to get some second or third opinions for the remaining symptoms. Something smells fishy. I'm sure you know what I mean.

If you comment back or repost, I will do my best to help you out.

Best regards
Mike

Well white smoke usually means coolant from the engine is being burned off take back and have them check for coolant on top of pistons this means you need head gaskets it could also be the turbo leaking coolant into exhaust good luck

It could be doing its job, sounds like what you put in tank is problem. Oil change would not cause that. I would not worry unless it keeps going after fuels runs down.

White smoke coming through both ends of the car. oil changed 2 months ago. gas full. new battery. not sure whats wrong. having to put antifreeze in alot this past week. whats wrong??

the cylinder head gasket is failing- antifreeze is being sucked into combustion chamber and burning-thus the white smoke- sorry- you need to have heads planned and new head gaskets installed- cheers Denny

White smoke coming out of tail pipe.

WHITE smoke? Or BLUE smoke? White smoke is usually caused by burning antifreeze (possible blown head gasket). Engine oil burning causes a bluish colored smoke.

Changing the oil two months ago means absolutely nothing to me. I have customers that travel 6000 miles or more in a month. Oil consumption is measured in volume over miles, not volume over months. It is normal for most 4 cylinder engines to use a little less than 1/2 quart in 1000 miles (even more than that for 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder engines).

What does it mean when i have loss of power and white smoke from the exhaust?

Didn't I just answer this?
Coolant leaking into your oil, due to a cracked head, block, or bad head gasket will destroy an engine quickly. This will show with a white, sweet smelling exhaust.

white smoke usually means a blown head gasket or cracked head but first check the pcv valve if its stuck open your engine could be pulling in oil and burning it raw, if not good chance its your head gasket.
