You have to pull the rotor off and the bearings are on the spindle behind the rotor or the drum if they are drum brakes

CAUTION: The brake drum and hub assembly removal in this procedure is for installing a new wheel bearing, not for access to brake system components.

-All vehicles

Remove the dust cap.
Remove the wheel and tire.
For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

-Vehicles with rear drum brakes
Release the parking brake.
Remove the brake drum and hub assembly.
Remove and discard the wheel hub retaining nut.


-Vehicles with rear disc brakes
Remove the brake disc.
For additional information, refer to in this section.

Remove the wheel hub.
Remove and discard the wheel hub retaining nut.


-All vehicles

Remove and discard the wheel speed sensor ring (brake disc shown).
Remove the circlip (brake disc shown).
Using the special tool, remove and discard the wheel bearing (brake disc shown).

-Installation

-All vehicles

CAUTION: Support the wheel hub assembly on the wheel mounting face and not on the wheel nut studs.

Using the special tool, install the new wheel bearing (brake disc shown).

Install the circlip (brake disc shown).

CAUTIONS:

Make sure the wheel speed sensor ring is not knocked, damaged and kept free from metal fragments.

Protect the face of the wheel speed sensor ring with a non-ferrous flat block to prevent damage.

Make sure the wheel hub or brake drum is adequately supported and do not allow it to rest on the wheel studs..

Make sure the wheel speed sensor ring is pressed on slowly and squarely until fully seated.

Do not exceed a maximum load of 10 kN.

Using the special tool, install a new wheel speed sensor ring (brake disc shown).

Vehicles with rear drum brakes

CAUTIONS:

Avoid impact on the wheel speed sensor ring.

Make sure the wheel speed sensor ring is clean.

Avoid any contact between the wheel speed sensor ring and a magnetic surface.

Rotate the wheel hub assembly 10 times counter-clockwise when tightening the wheel hub retaining nut to prevent damage to the wheel bearing.

NOTE: Install a new wheel hub retaining nut.

Install the brake drum and hub assembly.
Apply the parking brake.

-Vehicles with rear disc brakes


CAUTIONS:

Avoid impact on the wheel speed sensor ring.

Make sure the wheel speed sensor ring is clean.

Avoid any contact between the wheel speed sensor ring and a magnetic surface.

There is no real torque settings for the rear wheels, except to say, do not over tighten or you will stretch the lugs and the will loosen over time.

The rear wheel bearings on my 1998 Honda Civic Aerodeck are rumbling and I need to know how to replace them or regrease and is it a DIY or garage job


Your vehicle is equipped with sealed bearings that are pressed into the hub assembly. If your rear wheel bearings are making noise, you must replace the entire bearing and hub assembly (they cannot be greased).

To replace it, raise and support the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the brake drum. Remove the bearing cap, the spring nut and the axle washer. Remove the hub assembly and hub seal. The new hub assembly should come with a new hub seal installed. (See first picture below)

TIP: The brake drum has threaded holes in its face where an 8mm bolt can be inserted to help "push" the drum off of the hub assembly - they can get really stuck. (See second picture below)

hi this is common problem if you can slacken the handbrake cable this will prevent the shoes from becoming caught against the lipped edge that has worn your brake drum down and is catching on the edge of the brake shoe you may need to by a brake backplate spring kit as they tend to fall apart when taking the drum off undo the fixing center nut and refit the wheel now you have the wheel fitted to the drum you stand more chance of pulling the drum and wheel together from side to side it will evenually loosen turn the wheel at the same time and slowly screw the the whole wheel drum assembly off when you get the drum off lightly grind off the worn lipped edge so the drum can be taken on and off more easily

How to replace rear wheel bearing on 2003 hyandia sonata


Hub & Bearing Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Release parking brake.
  2. Remove rear wheel assembly.
  3. Remove rear wheel speed sensor from carrier.
  4. Dismount brake caliper and support with mechanic's wire.
  5. Remove brake disc.
  6. Remove 4 axle hub mounting bolts. Special tool 09432-11000 (Typical) hyundai-08-00-6021.gif

  7. Using tool 09432-11000 (or suitable gear puller), remove tone wheel.
  8. Remove carrier.
  9. Remove stakes and remove flange nut.
  10. Support bearing outer race flange and press rear axle hub out.
  11. Using tool 09432-11000 (or suitable puller), remove inner race from axle hub.
To Install:
Hub bearing assembly (Typical) hyundai-08-00-6029.gif

  1. Apply thin coat of grease to bearing contact surface and hub.
  2. Using and appropriate tool, press bearing into hub. CAUTION
    Do not press against outer race of wheel bearing.
  3. Install flange nut and stake nut until it meets concave portion of spindle.
  4. Install carrier.
  5. Use an appropriate tool to press tone wheel.
  6. Install hub/bearing assembly with rounded portion of outer race facing up.
  7. Install 4 hub/bearing assembly bolts and rotate hub to seat bearing.
  8. Measure wheel bearing starting torque with a spring balance or equivalent device.
    • Starting torque should measure 15.9 in lb (1.8 Nm) or less
  9. Install brake disc.
  10. Mount brake caliper.
  11. Install rear wheel speed sensor to carrier.
  12. Install rear wheel assembly.

To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Front wheel
    • Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads
      and the 4 anti-squeal shims

To Install:

CAUTION
Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the
vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons
on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or
replacement of the brake caliper.


  1. Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
  3. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
  4. Install or connect the following:

    • Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads
      NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced
      together with the pads.

    • 2 brake pads
    • Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
    • Clip
    • Front wheel

  5. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  6. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Rear
To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Rear wheel

    • 2 cylinder slide pins from rear caliper assembly
    • Caliper assembly from rear caliper mounting
    • 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shims from rear caliper mounting
    • 2 anti-squeal shims from each disc brake pads
    • Pad wear indicator plate from the inner side disc brake pad
    • 4 pad support plates from the rear caliper mounting

To Install:


  1. Install or connect the following:

    • 4 pad support plates on the rear caliper mounting
    • Pad wear indicator plate on the inside brake pad
      Note: Install the pad wear indicator facing downward.

    • Anti-squeal shims on each brake pad
    • 2 disc brake pads with anti-squeal shims to the caliper assembly

  2. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the sliding part of 2 caliper slide
    pins.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    • Disc brake caliper assembly with 2 caliper slide pins
    • Torque to 65 ft-lbs (88 Nm)
    • Rear wheel

  4. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  5. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Front wheel
    • Front brake caliper assembly

  3. Make matchmarks on the disc and the axle hub.
  4. Remove the front disc.

To Install:


  1. Align matchmarks and disc onto axle hub.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    • Front brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts

      1. Torque to 90 ft-lbs (123 Nm)

    • Front wheel

Brake Shoes Removal & Installation Duo-Servo Type To Remove:
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drums.
  4. Using a brake tool, remove the shoe return springs.
  5. Remove the shoe guide.
  6. Remove the hold-down springs and pins.
  7. Remove the actuator lever and pivot.
  8. Remove the lever return spring.
  9. Remove the actuator link, parking brake strut, spring retaining ring.
  10. Remove the parking brake lever and washer.
  11. Remove the shoe assemblies.
  12. Remove the adjuster screw and spring from the shoe assembly.
To Install:
  1. Use brake cleaning fluid to remove dirt from the brake drum. Check the drums for scoring, cracks and for out-of-round; service the drums as necessary.
  2. Check the wheel cylinders by carefully pulling the lower edges of the wheel cylinder boots away from the cylinders. If there is excessive leakage, the inside of the cylinder will drip fluid; repair or replace as necessary.
  3. Check the flange plate, which is located around the axle, for leakage of differential lubricant.
  4. Lightly lubricate the parking brake cable, parking brake lever where it enters the shoe and the backing plate-to-shoe contact points. Use high temperature, waterproof, grease or special brake lube.
  5. Install the parking brake lever into the secondary shoe with the attaching bolt, spring washer, lockwasher, and nut. It is important that the lever move freely before the shoe is attached. Move the assembly and check for proper action.
  6. Lubricate the adjusting screw and make sure it works freely.
  7. Connect the adjuster screw and spring to the bottom portion of both shoes. Ensure the spring does not interfere with the adjuster rotation when installed. The primary (smaller shoe pad area) to the front and secondary shoe (larger shoe pad area) to the rear of the vehicle.
  8. Install the shoe assembly. Ensuring the shoe webs are positioned correctly against the wheel cylinder.
  9. Install the parking brake cable.
  10. Secure the primary shoes with the hold-down pin and spring.
  11. Install the parking brake strut and the strut spring.
  12. Install the actuator lever and pivot, securing the assembly with the hold-down pin and spring. Install the actuator link and spring.
  13. Install the return springs.
  14. Check the operation of the self-adjusting mechanism by moving the actuating lever by hand.
  15. Adjust the brakes and install the drum.
  16. Adjust the parking brake.
  17. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
Leading-Trailing Type To Remove:
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drums.
  4. Raise the lever arm of the actuator until the upper end is clear of the slot in the adjuster screw.
  5. Slide the actuator off the adjuster pin. Disconnect the actuator spring from the shoe.
  6. Remove the hold-down spring assemblies and pins.
  7. Pull the bottom ends of the shoes apart and lift the lower return spring over the anchor plate. Allow the shoe ends to come together and remove the spring.
  8. Remove the shoe assembly, along with the upper return spring and the adjusting screw assembly.
  9. Remove the upper return spring and the adjusting screw assembly from the shoes.
  10. Remove the retaining ring, pin, spring washer, and parking brake lever.

To Install:
  1. Clean adjuster wheel and the backing plates with a suitable cleaner. Lubricate the backing plate contact points, levers and adjuster with a suitable lubricant.
  2. Assemble the parking lever, spring washer (concave side facing the brake lever), pin, and retaining ring onto the rearward shoe.
  3. Install the adjuster pin in the forward shoe with the pin projecting 0.276 in. (7mm) from the side of the shoe web where the adjuster actuator is installed.
  4. With the brake shoes resting on a flat surface (the shoe with the parking lever to the rear of the vehicle), install the upper return spring.
  5. Install the adjuster screw assembly with the spring clip facing the backing plate.
  6. Place the shoes in position on the backing plate. Do not place the lower shoe webs under the anchor plate.
  7. Install the lower return spring, spread the bottom of the shoes and position the shoe against the backing plate.
  8. Install the hold-down pins and spring assemblies.
  9. Install the adjuster actuator over the end of the adjuster pin so the top leg engages the notch in the adjuster screw.
  10. Install the actuator spring, being careful not to over-stretch it more than 3.27 in. (83mm).
  11. Install the parking brake cable to the lever.
  12. Adjust the parking brake if the shoes will not totally retract.
  13. Install the drum, tire and wheel assembly. Adjust the rear brakes and lower the vehicle.

How to disassemble the rear end in a 2000 gmc yukon and how to remove axles


Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel and tire assemblies but do not remove the lug nuts
  3. Raise and support the vehicle
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Wheel and tire assemblies
    • Axle lubricant into a suitable container
    • Rear driveshaft
    • Parking brake cable
    • Brake calipers
    • Shock absorbers from the axle brackets
    • Vent hose from the rear axle vent fitting
    • Nuts and the washers from the U-bolts
    • U-bolts, spring plates and spacers from the axle assembly
  5. Lower the axle assembly from the vehicle
To Install:
  1. Place the rear axle assembly under the vehicle
  2. Align the rear axle assembly with the springs then connect the spacers, spring plates and the U-bolts to the rear axle
  3. Raise the rear axle assembly into position
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • Washers and nuts to the U-bolts; Torque to: 59 lb-ft. (80 Nm) then, Torque to: 89 lb-ft. (120 Nm)
    • Vent hose to the rear axle vent fitting
    • Shock absorbers to the rear axle
    • Brake calipers (See: Brake Caliper)
    • Parking brake cable (See: Parking Brake Cable)
    • Rear driveshaft (See: Rear Driveshaft)

  5. Fill the rear axle with lubricant
  6. Bleed the brake system (See: Brake Bleeding)
  7. Install the wheel and tire assemblies
  8. Lower the vehicle to the ground
  9. Torque lug nuts as follows:
    • Single Wheel: Torque to: 140 lb-ft. (190 Nm)
    • Dual Wheel: Torque to: 175 lb-ft. (240 Nm)
  10. Road test the vehicle to check performance

Rear wheel bearing


if its like the 99 winstar:

safely support the van, remove rear wheel, remove brake drum, remove grease cap. remove caged locknut assembly (38mm socket i think.) then pull the hub assembly from the axel. you may need to cut away the inner race if the bearing falls apart. clean axel, apply alittle anti size compound, then push on the new hub assembly. tighten down the hub nut to specifications (should be on the leaflet in the new bearing package), install dust cap, install drum, install wheel, lower and drive :)

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly NOTE: Wheel bearings are not serviceable and should therefore be replaced as an assembly with the wheel hub (1104).

Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  1. Remove the hub grease cap (1131) from the wheel hub.
  1. If equipped with disc brakes, remove the rear disc brake caliper (2552) and rear disc brake rotor (2C026). Refer to Section 06-04 for the removal procedure.
  1. If equipped with drum brakes, remove the two brake drum screws and the brake drum (1126).
  1. Unstake the rear axle wheel hub retainer (4B477) securing the wheel hub to the rear wheel spindle (4A013). Remove and discard the rear axle wheel hub retainer.
  2. Remove the wheel hub from the rear wheel spindle.

Brake Shoes Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Raise and safely support rear of vehicle.
  2. Remove rear wheel assemblies.
  3. Release parking brake.
  4. Remove brake drum.
Rear brake shoe assembly

  1. Using an appropriate brake spring tool, unhook upper return spring from rearward brake shoe.
  2. Push retainer springs IN and turn to remove tension pins.
  3. Lower brake shoe assembly and remove lower return spring.
  4. Remove brake shoe assembly from back plate.
  5. Disconnect parking brake cable from lever and remove brake shoe.
  6. Remove parking brake lever from brake shoe.

To Install:

  1. Install parking brake lever to rearward brake shoe.
  2. Secure lever to brake show with a NEW U-clip.
  3. Pinch U-clip closed.
  4. Connect parking brake cable to rearward brake shoe.
  5. Install self-adjuster lever spring on front brake shoe.
  6. Assemble clevises, adjuster bolt and upper and lower return springs.
  7. Apply a light coat of grease (Molykote 44MA or equivalent) to sliding surfaces.
  8. Install brake shoe assembly onto back plate.
  9. Install tension springs.
  10. Using an appropriate brake spring tool, unhook upper return spring to rearward brake shoe.
  11. Install brake drum.
  12. Install rear wheel assembly.
  13. Lower vehicle.
  14. Adjust self-adjusting brakes by pressing brake pedal several times.
