Question about 1997 GMC Jimmy
Do you mean the latch mechanism? Try spraying it with some lithium grease and then pull on the handle and physically open the latch up. If the handle doesn't release the latch from either the outer handle or the inner handle, then the linkage may have separated.
On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you can pull the seal off the door and look at the rods and mechanisms

The very best way money and time wise is get a "big easy" lockout tool from napa. it will get you in your truck in two min. or less! the best and it is like 30 dollars.
if you need to get in it and don't to do that your other option is slim jim or clothes hanger(metal) and find something to wedge in netween the door and body of the truck at the very top right edge of the door to pull the door away from the body and you can get the hanger in there.
or call "aaa" they can do it also.
good luck man

Any possibilities of coats, clothing brushing against dooor and INADVERTANTLY latching them closed ? OK heres how to open the latch. Make sure door lock is in the UNLOCK position. With one hand , lift and HOLD up, OUTSIDE door handle, while taking your pointer finger and flipping open the latch on the side of the door. VOILA Hope this helps

I have been dealing with the same problem and I'm a little further than you are. You need two people to do this job. Open the front door and it will give you access to the hinge pin. If I remember correctly you can pop off the snap rings and pull the pins. This will allow you to open the door just enough to get the interior panel off the door to allow you access to the actuator. Unfortunately, both my rear door actuators have been done twice in the last 5 weeks, But they are seized in the locked position again. I,m pretty sure its not just the actuators that are bad. Something else is causing this and that is why I'm here. Good luck with that one.
