Does it get hot while just idling with the AC off? Does it get hot driving around at slow speeds with the AC off? Does it get hot at highway speeds with the AC off? Does it get hot under all three conditions or only under one or two of these conditions? Is it OK until you turn the AC on? Thanks, rich

-Sounds like you did not bleed air from the coolant. So the water can't go through to the thermostat .That's why it so hot to a boiling point. After that the thermostat open and now the water can go through.
-You're Okay.
-Remember. The thermostat can't open with out hot water.

I have a 2001 eclipse 3.0. my bf changed the thermostat last oct or so.he also just changed the valve cover gasket for me bc mine was leaking. now it wants to run hot. i have checked the fluids and its...

There are several possible causes for it running hot.
  1. Loose drive belt - loose or worn drive belt would slip and cause the water pump to turn slower than it should
  2. Bad bearing in water pump - accompanied by occasional screeching and possible leaking
  3. Bad thermostat - this could be the case if you've used a radiator sealant that could cause the thermostat to stick
  4. Possible bad head gasket - this would produce white smoke from the tailpipe and bubbling of the auto transmission fluid

Lower radiator hose stays cold after running for hours

could be you fitted the thermostat in the wrong way around ,or the plastic impeller on the water pump with a steel drive shaft has failed they end up with the drive shaft spinning but the impeller is not turning ,go for the thermostat first though .

COULD BE THERMOSTAT IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE IS NOT HOT AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE GOING TO WATER PUMP IS HOT THE THERMOSTAT STICKING PARTIALLY CLOSE.IF TOP HOSE IS HOT THE RADIATOR,ENGINE BLOCK HEATER CORE NEED FLUSHING OUT.IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP, FAULTY WATER PUMP WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.REPLACE RADIATOR CAP MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 / 50 MIX SOLUTION ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM. IF ALL LOOKS GOOD CHECK ENGINE OIL ON DIP STICK, IF OIL IN DIP STICK LOOK LIKE MILKSHAKE YOU HAVE BLOWED HEAD GASKET THAT WILL CAUSE ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE DRIVING CAR IN SHORT DISTANCE AND ENGINE OVERHEATING.

A t hot temp subaru forester 1998

A car running hot can be of many causes. Thermostat can be checked by removing and place in boiling water thermostat should open when water reachs temp, hole in hoses hoses will expand when they become hot so a pinhole will open and beome lager when hoses heat, enginge needs flushing a lot of rust and dirt in anti freeze will cause the car not to run correctly, and water pump going bad. Also heater core however I would flush engine before replaceing heater core as it may become clogged.

Have a 1993 toyota paseo it keeps running hot change out radiator and house it does not have a tremostate could that be making it run hot

An explanation of the cooling system.
You start your car, it is cold at first. The thermostat is shut. Car warms up and raises the temperature of the coolant in the engine block. Thermostat opens up. Water from the radiator (cool) is exchanged for water from the engine block (hot) The cool water causes the thermostat to shut. This traps the hot water in the radiator so that it can be cooled down. The cool water that was exchanged for the hot water, now becomes the hot water because it is in the engine block. It heats up until it's temperature causes the thermostat to open again, exchanging cool water for hot water. If you have no thermostat, then you will never hold water inside your radiator. You have to hold it there to allow it to cool off, then it becomes useful to cool your engine. So, yes put a thermostat back in it, and please vote as to whether this was helpful or not.

Overheating problem

water pump. water pump. water pump. i am a vw dealer tech and on 2.0 and 1.8t beetles the water pump impeller is plastic, and what happens is usually another component, fans, fan control module (under battery tray), thermostat, fails and because the impeller is plastic with just one overheat the plastic becomes brittle and shatters, pull the water pump out and you will see the impeller in 3 or 4 pieces. replace water pump and make sure t stat opens, fans come on (a/c off) and proper water pump flow.
