Jumped starter terminals 30/87, starter works but no crank when key turned on.


Click no start is typically a bad battery, bad starter, bad solenoid or loose dirty battery connections. But seems you have covered those items. Have you checked you negative battery cable where it attaches to the frame and motor? Use multi meter and check from positive of battery to the motor(block) for 12 volts. Also do this while turning key to start position. If voltage drops out when doing this double check battery voltage and all connections. If it does not drop then check the solenoid wire coming from ignition. When key in start position you should have a good twelve volts. If you you do then test the main leads hooked to solenoid for power. If solenoid wire from ignition has less than 12 volts double check connections at battery and also test the clutch pedal switch.

This could be a couple different things causing your No-start condition. first thing I would check (Battery is good) access the starter solenoid, the small single wire connection is the start signal. Test for 12 volts here with DVOM or test light while someone turns the key. If there is 12 volts reading, the starter solenoid is defective. If there isn't 12 volts reading check all the fuses (with test light).
The second item causing the trouble could be the Neutral Safety Switch (Auto Trans) or Clutch Safety Switch (Manuel Trans) These could be open or out of adjustment.

ITurn key, clicking sound, no turn over


If it won't crank over, it's a problem in the starting circuit, not the ignition circuit. Check your battery and starter for clean, tight connections. Listen for that click to see if it comes from the starter solenoid on the starter-maybe have someone try to start it while you watch and listen under the hood. If the click is from the solenoid (and not from the starter relay), then the starter is not getting full battery power to crank (bad connection), or the starter needs to come off and be tested.
If the click is from the starter relay, you could pull off the little purple wire to the starter solenoid and see if it has 12 volts when the key is in start position. If you have power there in cranking position on the switch, the solenoid is bad or the starter may be the problem-again, it will have to come off for testing. If you have no power at the solenoid in cranking position, the circuit from the ignition switch to the solenoid is not working. The start relay and the neutral safety switch (or clutch switch if manual transmission) are in the starting circuit from ignition switch to the starter solenoid. Good luck.

I have a 1996 Chevy Suburban 1500. No crank or any noise or sound when trying to start. Battery is good, even tried jumping to make sure. Could this be the starter? If so, where is it located?


The starter is next to the side of the lower engine block where the engine and trans meet(I believe on the passenger side on GM V8s)You should get 12 volts on the small(purple?) wire of the solenoid when the key is turned to "start".If you don't get 12 volts when the key is turned,it could be the switch on the shifter(usually referred to as the PRNDL switch)IF you get 12 volts at the solenoid when you turn the key,replace the starter(my Chevy work truck has gone through 6 starters(ONE A YEAR)since I've had it!)

My husband replaced the turn signals & headlight & now car wont start


Hello! I sent a test procedure to you Wednesday evening but It appears you did not receive it ..This is the path for Battery and Ground to pull the crank relay which applies +12 volts to the starter solenoid..Either there is a fault in this path or the starter itself was damaged in the collision...Leaving the ignition switch when in start ...+12 volts on the Yellow wire goes to the Crank fuse (10A)...Other side of fuse is Purple wire to PCM C-2 Pin # 23...+ 12 volts at this point...PCM sends a ground on C-2 pin #76...Yellow/Black wire to crank relay....+ 12 volts from the PCM ABS fuse (10A)...via Park/Neutral switch to crank relay...Relay pulls and applies +12 volts on the Purple wire that goes to the starter...That +12 volts, if there,indicates a starter damaged in the collision...If not there chase it back until you lose it...Would you be so kind as to not rate my solution until the test procedure is accomplished...Send a comment..saailer

No voltage on purple wire @ starter. I have 12 volts on yellow wire coming out of the ignition switch.


You should have 12 volts on the purple wire when you turn the ignition key to start and not in run. If you have no voltage on purple wire at starter (and the wire is clean) when key is turned to start, check the fuses (the fuse block is located behind a cover in the dash to the left of the steering column). If fuses are good you may need an ignition switch. Hope this helps.

My truck will not start. I thought it was battery or starter but checked them both. I also install new switch module in steering column. I took starter off and it works fine without a losd . Is it possible...


One of the best ways to check the problem is to make sure that the starter is getting current when the key is turn to the start position. Get a test light or voltmeter. ON the firewall, passenger side, within a gropu of wires that runs along the firewall, untape the wires and look for a purple wire. This purple wire should have +12 volts when the key is in the start position. If there is not +12 volts then the problem would be with the ignition or wiring leading to that point of wire where you are checking for voltage. Now if you have the correct voltage then the problem lies with the starter or starter solenoid. When checking the starter, just above the eyelets that connect to the bolts of the starter, there are some fusible links. Use the testlight of volt meter to be sure that voltage is visible on both sides of these "fuses". Good luck I hope this helps. PLease give rating.

Will not start, new starter and sill will not turn over no click at all


1) Check the battery for 12 volts. 2) Trace to the Ignition switch or starter solenoid and see if you get 12 volts when the key is turned. If not, and you have 12 volts at the switch, then this points to the switch. If you do get 12 volts at the starter, then this points to the starter solenoid. 3) There are other reasons for not seeing 12 volts at the ignition switch - Is the neutral safety switch not working or is the car not in park or neutral? Is there a security system interfering?

No power to starter


Hi Tonymcder;
Here's what happens in the start sequence when ypi turn the key.

When you turn the key, you should at least hear the starter solenoid click. When you turn the key the ignition switch sends 12 volts to the Starter solenoid ( really just a relay). The Solenoid closes and applies 12 volts (at a high current) to the starter motor to crank the engine. If you have a way to measure voltage, you should get 12 volts at the small terminal on the starter solenoid. The solenoid is mounted on the top of the starter motor.If you get
no voltage, probably an ignition switch If you get 12 volts and the starter doesn't crank the starter is probably defective. At this [point take a small hammer and tap the starter motor, not hard, just medium. Sometimes this will cause the starter motor to catch next time you turn the key. Best bet is to remove the starter motor (with solenoid attached) and take it to an Auto Zone type store where they can check it out for you. Be sure you disconnect the ground terminal of the battery before you attempt to remove the starter motor.
