Inspect closely at valve cover areas, just above the exhaust manifolds, that is the most common location for burning, as oil gets to it, but may be burned off, and never reach the ground...

Anyone know what to check and how to fix problem with 2011 Equinox with 2.4 ecotec engine?

The black sludge on bottom of engine is burnt oil. Scrape it off and see if it builds up again. Could have a leaking oil pan gasket. I would change oil and have a engine cleaner used to remove engine sludge. I believe engine runs rough when cold is because of sludge buildup and when it gets warm the oil moves more freely

Why does my van have a burning smell when I go up hills?

You may have a minor oil leak and not see any dripping on the ground. The van is under load going up hills and will run slightly hotter. If there is oil leaking in or around the exhaust manifold it will give a burning smell.

Smell and see gas 2001 expedition

Do not start or use Vehicle. If in Garage, do not use the garage door opener. Manually open the door to Garage. Call tow truck with a flatbed. Have vehicle towed to open location.

There were some vehicles with Recalled gas tank straps. But anything could be wrong. The fix may be reasonable.

Call a Dealer with your Vin# to see if yours is an affected Recall.

how often does it need to be filled? could be a hose leak or line leak but is burning off the motor or exhaust before it can puddle under car. does your exhaust pipe smell or produce a white steam ( smoke ) in color when running? this would indicate the motor has a bad head gasket or cracked head which is letting coolant burn through the cylinder(s), Double check for leaks, under and above motor. it takes a while for anti-freeze to burn off a hot surface due to its lubricant so wipe any wet area and check again. Also you can pull spark plugs( noting what cylinder each plug came from) a spark plug will be very white or clean in color if that cylinder is burning coolant, which indicates a bad gasket or cylinder leak.

Whinning noise is the bearing of the oil pump inside torque converter.
Burning smell fluid has little to know pressure ( cause pump is dying) can't circulate to cool parts as well as provide pressure. Time for a rebuild.

Burnt Oil Smell

Check carefully around the valve covers, this is the area that leaks most frequently occur, and being located next to the exhaust manifold can easily cause the burning smell. There is a very easy to replace gasket under the cover. Other possibilities, shop or you when changed or added oil spilled a bit and that has worked down to the exhaust manifold and is causing the burnt oil smell. Last possibility is that you do have a slow leak on the underside of the engine that is blowing back onto the exhaust system causing the smell.

The tire noise will be due to the car needing a wheel alignment, just take it down to your local tyre dealer and they will check it for you if you are not sure.

As for the burning smell, if it's coming from the engine it could be a simple oil leak leaking onto the exhaust or could be more serious like worn rings or valve guides.

Good luck.
