Your car should have a timing chain not a timing belt.

Does a 2005 cavalier have a timing belt or chain 2.2 and when do I change it?

This 2.2 Liter engine uses a Timing chain, timing chains are never replaced unless the engine is being overhauled, there is no periodic replacement required like a Timing belt. Engines that use chains are much more durable than those that use belts and last longer per dollar spent on maintenance costs. I wish I had a dollar for every ruined engine due to a failed rubber timing belt.

Is it really necessary to replace the timing belt at 80,000 miles

Not unless you care about your car. When a car manufacturer recommends that you change a timing belt, and usually a water pump. It is for your own good, they may last an average of 100,000 miles; however, it's always best to change your timing belt well before then. If your timing belt breaks it will bend your valves, ruin your head, and cost a lot in labor. So pay $500- $700 now for a new timing belt, water pump, and labor, or wait until your timing belt breaks and pay $3000 for a new head with valves and labor. It's up to you. Happy Motoring!!! :) :) :)

How many miles can I go before getting the water pump, timing belt?

The water pump can easily go 130,000 or more miles but will give you warning signs when it begins to fail. It will leak small quantities of coolant onto the pump surface at a weap hole near the center of the pump (check with flashlight) and as it fails it will begin making a grinding noise and you can smell the sweet ethylene glycol odor from the leak.

The timing belt will go 130,000 miles or more without a LOT of risk if you drive mostly highway miles, but will NOT give you any warning (no easy-to-detect signs of impending failure) and it is difficult to inspect the belt for failure signs so the manufacturer of most modern autos recommend replacement of the timing belt at around 100,000 miles.

However, you need to verify your motor has a timing "belt" and not a timing chain before you schedule a replacement and remember the longer you go the higher your risk of ruining your motor if the belt breaks. If the belt breaks, the cost will easily be 10 times the cost of replacing the timing belt.

Now if you want to change the belt yourself, make sure you have a good shop manual and try to find a friend who has done a similar procedure to check your work during the last couple of steps including removing the slack properly and checking the marks for accurate alignment.

I have 151,000 miles on my 2002 4cyl Camry and have not changed the timeing or the sepeitine belt: Is it time to have it done?

Hi:
It is overdue time to change your timing belt and waterpump, as you are on borrowed time on the timing belt. The waterpump and tensioner should be changed along with the timing belt, as they can ruin a new timing belt if they fail. Your serpentine belt should be inspected and replaced if needed too.

Just Bought a 1990 Volvo 240GL Auto 2L

Hallo Markmac945,

I've been a Volvo Service worker for about a year and seen lot of these Volvo's. It's true that if the timingsbelt snaps the engine wil be ruined. It would be wise (seen that the service history isn't there) to change the belt if your not sure it happend. I life in the Netherland and because we have cars with a KM-dile, i don't know if this is any help but; timings belts in Europe sould be changed at 120.000 KM. How manny miles that is, well I just don't know. The engine in your Volvo is an B21 or B23. Both timing belts have to be changed at 120.000KM. But for the price (being a easy timing belt change) I sure change the timing belt. Than you'll be sure that everything is in good order.
