Question about 2006 Kia Sorento
The answer here is to have the cars ECU scanned for fault codes. The ECU is the main computer in the car and will have stored a fault code which will provide a clear diagnoses of the fault. These codes can easily be read with a scan tool that hooks up to your car.
Without this anything else is pure guess work. It may well be that your timing is out but your mechanic is jumping the gun to make this assumption without a proper fault disagnoses. Often these type of faults are related to faulty sensors such as MAF or O2 sensors or other sensors on the vehicle.
Other causes may relate to a problem within the electrical or fuelling system and the stored fault codes will give a clear pointer as to the cause of the problem. In your case this could range from a faulty fuel pump to a problem with the timing on the vehicle or the crankshaft sensor or a problem with the emissions system on the car.
As modern vehicles have several sensors it is vital to have these fault codes checked to identify the root cause of the problem. Some Auto parts stores such as Autozone will do a scan of the vehicle for free or for a minimal charge.
At the very least you should insist that your mechanic does a scan to properly diagnose the fault before any other work is done.
Hope this helps. Please do rate my answer. Many Thanks.
