So whats the question????? that sounds about right. if it also has a knocking sound below the column, have them replace the steering shaft while they are down there.

SOURCE: rack and pinion leak

It needs replaced a rebuilt unit cost $350.00 and you need the tools to remove the tie rod ends and you have to unhook the steering wheel, if you have a hoist it's not to bad but a do it yourselfer it's a pretty big job, the fluid is that color because it's sucking air into the fluid because of the leak and the shaking is caused by one side not holding hydrolic pressure because of the leak and wore out inner tierod ends. If you do do it you need a whole lot more information and much more instructions to do it, afterwords it will have to be alingned, having done it before and having the proper air tools I can do one in three hours. You might take a week but it would be a learning experince.

07 impala lt, replaced inner n outer tie rod n inner boot had fluid in it. It still pulls n makes clicking noise. Was told its rack n pinion. True? N is it an expensive fix? Mufflers need replaced too, I...

I dont know much about the impala steering but most rack and pinion setups are the same . i had a loud clicking noise in my Camry when on full lock and it got woset I though also rack n pinion ,but it turned out a high pressure hose from the power steering box had a leak . So check fluild in power steer box and check it is not leaking onto tierods there should be no fluid in a tie rod end boot . If the fluid in the box is low or none top it up with auto trans fluid and see if it stops the clicking noise

Does a 1997 grand gt 3.1 liter have rack & pinion steering? I'm told the power steering went out and I don't know if it might be the pump or what.

Your car does have rack and pinion steering. If all of the fluid leaked out somewhere and you continued to drive, you probably have 2 problems to repair:

1. What ever started leaking (return hose, rack, pressure hose, or could just be the pump itself)
2. Power steering pump was damaged from lack of lubrication (fluid)

I went to drive my car to work this morning and lost the power steering feels like it locked up the leak of power steering fluidf is leaking from the rack and pinion not pump

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the oil seals of the rack and pinion should be replaced. If the seals are worn out it tends to leak and can definitely feel a loss of power. If it still leaks even after the replacement then the rack and pinion should be replaced.

There are instances that after oil seal replacement it still leaks it's because that the rack and pinion has severe damage.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Power steering fluid leak, 1992 dodge stealth

If the line from the power steering pump to the rack and pinion is leaking, replace it.

If the rack and pinion is leaking replace it.

If the power steering pump itself is leaking, then replace it.

Which section is leaking?

I am working on my 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe, 2.2 4 cylinder engine. I am having a few problems with it. About July i paid to have my radiator fan replaced, which was replaced with a used one off...

Recommend you get a new fan this time. They aren't that expensive. If there are no leaks under your car, I wouldn't worry about what the mechanic said. If it starts to leak bad, you will know it without damage. A car that old is going to have a few small leaks here and there, and it isn't wirth the cost to fix them all. If you do see more substantial leaks, try to identify the type of fluid and location, then get back to us.

Leaking power steerring fluid. Garage said replace

thats about right, but a 2005 needing a rack, it is possible but i would get a second garage to look , take it somewhere else, dont tell them you were told it needs a rack, just tell them you have a p/s leak. this way you have two estimates and you will know for sure its the rack.hope this helps.

I have a minor broken seal on my rack and pinion

There is but it's not going to help, the rack and pinion steering has large amount of pressure on it when you turn the steering wheel. If the seal is bad, sooner not later. The seal will fail and you lose all the power steering fluid and the power steering which can in turn also damage the rack and pinion. The safest and cheapest thing to do is get it repaired before it get's worst and you end up replacing the rack and pinion too. Good luck and keep me posted. be glad to help

1999 dakota rack and pinion leak

You can change the seal, but the new one will most likely leak soon after, the seal starts leaking because of problems in the rack from wear, I would try it but if it leaks soon after replace the rack, they are cheap rebuilt.
