Typically, jiggling does not help, however fully pushing the shifter into the far side of park should help, if it does adjust the linkage to have slightly more push. Some designs have a portion of the column that turns, and you can apply assistance by turning it.

Still, adjust it....

Try this. I had the same thing happen on my 2004 and this works. On the underneath side of the steering column, there is a little rubber plug. Remove the rubber plug and get something like a pen/pencil (I use the eraser end of a pencil) and push in the hole. There is a little button/switch you depress. While depressing the little button, turn your keys and they should come out.

This car is a 2006 Cobalt. It will start and run but the key won't come out of the ignition when I turn it off

If it is a floor shift automatic, there is a cable that comes up to the key. Shake the shift after in park or turn steering wheel side to side and see if that will work.

Key will not turn wheel wont move and cant shift gears what can it be

You have locked the steering wheel. You will need to be forceful with the steering wheel and keep trying to turn the key when turning the steering wheel. It will eventually let you turn the key and start the car.

Good Luck,

Cannot get key to turn in jeep. Have already driven it numerous times today, suddenly can't move steering wheel or gear shift and key will not turn. Help!

Try turning the steering wheel (hard) right and left while turning the key. Steering lock , and ignition lock work in conjunction with each other.

Key locked in ignition... can't get it out. HELP!

while in park, press harder up past park and it will disengage. Otherwise there is a pin on the ignition you can press and remove the entire ignition. You call also lightly tap gently around igniton piece to loose the pins inside that hold the key.

The key won't come out of the ignition.

this may sound strange but will most likely work:

You will need another person to assist you. This usually happens when parked on a hill or grade.

While trying to remove the key, have the second person push the car forward and back as if the car were stuck.

This will revolve the gears in the transmission a little and most likely will release the key.

If not, call your dealer.

Gearshift lock

please try giggling the key a bit when pressing break pedal and also wiggle steering wheel and see what happens. does it go in eventually ? and if so what did you do to get it into gear i'll be waiting to hear from you good luck ps sounds like it could be a poorly adjusted park switch or a bad ignition switch not unblocking the safety shift lock.
