Hello! To check the fluid level, the first thing you want to do is get the fluid to operating temperature, by driving it for a bit and letting it shift through all gears. Once you've done that you need to make sure you park the car on a very level surface. Remove the front passenger wheel and the splash guard. From there reference the picture below to give you an idea where the fluid check plug is located - there is no dipstick on this transmission (4T45e). You will also see the fill plug location.

If you do a pan drop and filter replacement only, the fill capacity is 6.9 quarts. You will want to use Dexron III type transmission fluid.

FYI - here are the torque specs for the pan bolts is 106 in/lbs and the check/fill plugs are both 124 in/lbs.

Hope this helps and good luck!

WRONG!!!! I work on cars and currently have a 2004 Pontiac grand am SE1. The transmission fluid must be changed EVERY 60,000 miles on this car. The only way you can check the level of the tranny fluid is by putting the car on a lift by a mechanic in a shop and there is a certain access port area or plug underneath that will determine what the current level of fluid is in the transmission. Or you can just go ahead and do a Transmission Fluid/Filter change. When the transmission pan gasket and the filter is changed it will then be refilled with 9 1/2 qts of Dextron III transmission fluid or any equivalent which you can find cheaply at any walmart store. There is a red cap for the fill tube area located under the air filter box and to the left if you will look. That is where you fill the car back up with transmission fluid. You will need a special transmission funnel to stick into the fill tube to re fill the transmission). (You can find this special funnel at any autozone parts store). You can also buy the Auto Repair Manual for your car that has detailed instructions and specs for your car at any Autozone parts store. The manual is called the Haynes Auto Repair Manual and just look for the one specific for your car. Also if there are any colleges or trade schools in your area that have Auto Repair courses, most of them also repair cars. Most usually do not charge for labor, only parts and a small shop fee. If this is the case, call them asap, they can help you. If you need anymore help let me know. I work on cars.

The service manual for that transmission says that it is filled for the life of the car, doesn't need to be changed, and there is no dipstick. If it is leaking or is not shifting correctly, have the transmission changed. However after 190,000 miles it could just be a little low. Shannon's answer above is right unless the transmission has been leaking a lot of fluid on your driveway. It's a good idea to change the fluid and the filter and gasket, you just don't need to change it every 50,000 miles. 150,000 is probably a safe bet.

How to change transmission oil in 2000 Pontiac grand am

You have two choices, you can either take it to a shop and have it power flushed, recommended because this gets rid of all the fluid and replaces it with new fluid. The second is to drop the transmission pan, most cars don't have a drain plug for transmission fluid, so you would need to take out all the bolts holding the transmission pan out slowly letting the fluid drain as you bring the pan down. After you have the pan off I would go ahead and change the transmission filter, it is just above the pan inside the transmission. Place the pan back onto the transmission and fill with fluid, about 6-8 quarts.

It has a capacity of 5 quarts of SAE 5W30 oil with filter change. The cooling system capacity is 2 3/4 gallon of a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. The 40T40E transmission/torque converter holds a total capacity of 12.9 quarts or 6.9 quarts to just drain the pan and replace the fluid.

What is the most common or some problems to look into when it comes to the transmission slipping. the car is a 3.1 V6 Pontiac Grand Am. i have some ideas but dont want to go out and replace something that...

The first and foremost ( and cheapest) problem is inadequate fluid level. To check your fluid level properly,l run the car for a bit until it is at normal operating temperature, and check it while the vehicle is running. Failure to do this will result in an inaccurate reading. If the dipstick indicates you need to add fluid, do this with the engine running. Add a little bit of fluid at a time, then cycle through all the gears (P,R,N, D), leaving it in each gear for a few seconds before moving on to the next. Repeat this process until you the dipstick indicates sufficient fluid. Be careful not to overfill, as grossly overfilling the transmission can result in damage. If your problem is not insufficient fluid, the next most likely cause is poor fluid condition, requiring a good drain and fill to remedy. Take a look at the fluid on the dipstick. Good fluid should be bright red. If it is brownish, or appears thin, you need to change it. Accomplish this by draining the old fluid, usually requiring you to drop the transmission pan, and change the transmission fluid filter located inside the oil pan. Then refill according to the process above. If the problem persists, you progress into possible pad shift solenoids, or possible deteriorating bands, the latter of which will require a transmission rebuild or a new transmission. Hope this helps out, and hope your problems don't turn out to be too severe. Good luck and have a great day!

How often to change transmission fluid in a 2004 ponitac grand am

Never to maybe once for the life of the car. Some of the older cars were drained by removing a magnetic plug in the transmission pan and often the service centers conned the owner into letting them drop the pan and change the filters, which invariably caused problems with leakage due to pinched seals, which caused problems with the transmission getting to hot for lack of fluid. "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Just add fluid as needed if ever.

You didn't state what size engine you have.
The 2.2 engine----- 6.9 qts.
The 2.3 engine-----7.4 qts.
The 2.4 is 7.4 qts.
The 3.1 is 7.4 qts.
The 3.4 is 6.9 qts.
These are the capacities for refilling after being drained.

Where is the dipstick located for the transmission fluid on a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire

According to the owners manual unless you drive in hilly, or heavy stop and go traffic like a taxi, you should never have to add trans mission fluid unless you have a leak. The manual doesn't even give a fluid capacity for the auto transmission. So I guess when you have to have the auto trans. filter changed, you have to take the car to a transmission specialist. If in fact the filter even needs to be changed. The manual leaks you to believe that the transmission fluid and filter are lifetime products.
