Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Jeep dies when I try to shift. manual transmission, 4.0, 4wd. Jeep won't start when clutch is engaged and it dies when clutch is engaged. Reverse lights work, it will start and run if I start it in gear- ex.- Push in clutch, shift to first then start (turn key)- jeep will roll then start but dies when I push in the clutch... I'm sure it's electrical, I narrowing it down to ONE problem- Why does my jeep die when I engage the clutch?

You have a wire shorting out when you press the clutch. You will need to have help looking for it. Have someone set inside and press the clutch and look for a wire that is coming into contact with the linkage. Good Luck.

2002 jeep wrangler recently had a new clutch put in,I am starting to have trouble putting it into 1st gear and shifting into 2nd, all other shifting fine.what could it be?

to answers 100% accurately id have to drive it.

but here in net bunny land, cant do that!
but can ask you to post full symptoms.

(trans or clutch issues)
question 1: can you start car in any gear. clutch held to floor, even reverse )
Q2: once started, can you always shift to reverse (the tricky one, gin?) and not grinding and no complaints, balking?
yes/no
yes then your transmission fluid is low.
or worse.
Q3:
is the clutch MC full? and does not drop day by dead week by week???

q4: new clutch
all 5 parts? or more?
PP pressure plate
disc.
throw out bearing
flywheel pilot bearing (oops?)
new slave cylinder? ,mc set

the slave and mc are a fixed pair in 2002.FSM C6-p9
and on my 2008

the slave and MC are one part and pre filled.
there is no bleeding steps only top offs.

if the clutch drags,(seems it does)
put in a new MS/SLAVE first.
avoid the 10hr labor. if a new clutch, 4wd.ad4f429a-1dc7-4f8b-aa26-1116f5bce673.jpg

I have lots more to ask.
trouble putting
so you are driving
and shifting and moving
and 1>2 shifts are what, grinds, or balks.

can you start engine in any gear (clutch to floor)

can you shift any gear parked ,running, and clutch to floor and not moving. including REVERSE ?
if all are good, cept the 1>2 upshift
that means the clutch is not dragging.
and the #2 synchro ring is worn.
or running the wrong trans fluids.

the newer transmissions are very tricky here.
some are very upset with wrong lube. (or too low or is not black as tar)
or mixing 2 brands, or using synthetic and its so slippery the syncrho fails, (cured many like this)

if all this is true, and clutch don't drag (ever)
then get the car to jeep and have them drain it and fill it with the correct lube and win.

now answer 3:
it might be just the shift linkage messed up
if the 1>2 change balks. (not grind)
on mine boxes i can hear the synchro's spin up.
i can feel them engage, if i cant feel that
then the linkage is bad.

the word trouble does not say what that means.
define trouble putting....

find a shop, a Service tech, that owns a m/T box.
and win.
Some with a/t are clueless...
ive blown more clutches racing than many ever drove.
IMO, and remember it COST YOU NOTHING to ask. (I'm retired early, gin!)

Fix-ya

Reverse gear is does not use a synchro gear, so is it possible the clutch is not disengaging completely ?
The only other thing that comes to mind would be something in the linkage that keeps you from moving it far enough to engage.

1998 jeep grand cherokee 4x4. have the p0740 code. have to start from neutral, then shifts faily well. May start fluttering and making noise, have to put back to N, then to D and once again will shift. ...

P0740 JEEP - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit
Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Transmission shift shock
- Vehicle may not shift into the highest gear

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted

When is the code detected?
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) unlocked for 10 sec., ECM commands converter lock-up and did not record engine speed drop.

P0740 JEEP Description
The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.

Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

My 89 Jeep YJ manual will not go in to reverse while running

Problem is likely either a worn shift fork or bad synchro (both inside the transmission) It's unlikely that you have a clutch problem otherwise the problem would be with first and reverse and shifting other gears would also be difficult.

Hard to get into reverse

try shifting in to first and then reverse. reverse might be worn out. you can have that gear replaced without replacing the whole transmission.

1998 jeep wrangler dont shift into 1st or reverse

I will bet it grinds when you try to engage first or reverse. When this happened on my car, I adjusted the clutch and it improved. You need about a half inch of free play when you first touch the pedal with your foot. If you have a slave cylinder, (hydraulic clutch). You may need to bleed the system. With air in the system, you can't get enough clutch to fully disengage the trans from the motor.(Clutch and pressure plate) It's like you only pushed down half way on the pedal. If it's not hydraulic, it should be adjusted with wrenches. If clutch is fine, It could be a loose shift linkage. It would seem extra sloppy when moving shifter, It would just not go in gear, with out the grinding.Hope this helps. lbreen

Reverse does not engage

Most of the time when a Transmission is about to go out the Reverse will go first. and it may only be the reverse that doesn't work for weeks to months before the transmission finally drops

1991 jeep wrangler not shifting into gear could this be clutch

I would first bleed the tranny lines, if that doesnt work then your tranny is out and need to get it replaced. FYI with Jeep Wranglers, It is better to get a new transmission then to rebuild them
