Question about 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

2001 silverado. Auto transmission shifts very hard from 1st to 2nd after the transmission is warmed up. When just driving around town it seems to work fine but after driving for a distance (warming up the transmission, etc...) that's when the hard shifting will start, every time you take off from a stop. When it's cool you do not notice it that much. The "service engine light" has come on and gone off a couple of time and when I had it checked the code said the transmission is slipping. Could the clutches be going out or does this sound like a servo problem? Thank you for any info.

Whens the last time the tranny was serviced as far as filter and fluid the tranny may not be getting enough line pressure if the filter is dirty, or low on fluid, cuasing the slippage

Does the trany fluid smell burnt? Might want to have the trany flushed - torque converter too - and replace the filter in the trans. FYI you may know this but it is not recomended that overdrive be enabled when pulling a trailer - especially a heavily loaded one. Does your town have lots of hills - this is an added stain on the trany.

Shifts hard only some times when cold or hot from 3rd to over drive the truck has 130,000 miles and is a 2000 chevy silverado 2500 6.0L

1-2 shift is delayed and harsh, may not shift into OD: Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, replace or EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid failed. Easy fix in pan. Fix as soon as possible or hard parts will eventually break. Start with the simple and check the transmission fluid level and condition.Secondly, put a line pressure gauge (or visit a local trans shop) on the pressure test port and go for a drive to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.500" boost valve (easy fix in pan).
No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Good luck and keep me posted.

When trans. is warm after extended driving the up shifts are very hard. This only happens during extended driving periods. Around town everything shifts fine.

Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS. Good luck Auto Zone or Parts Source has this part and can be replaced with in 20 min. Both parts store will have the step by step instructions and i believe the cost is around $65.00 for the TPS which is better then a transmission replacement.

93 LincolnTown Car will not shift above 2nd.

Have you tried taking the car in for maintenance? Usually on most (older) auto transmissions there is a hose coming off of the exhaust manifold or carburetor area that provides the pressure for the transmission fluid. If that hose doesn't have a good seal, your shifting may be difficult and the transmission may not stay in the gear you want it to.
