Question about 1996 Ford F150 Regular Cab

1 Answer

1996 Ford F 150, get only 12-13 mpg.Highway with no load. Has the 4.9L inline 6. with auto trans. & overdrive. Does not trip any trouble codes and all ox. sensors checked out ok. Is this just the nature of the beast or can I expect better milage. I've had the truck 3 years and don't know what it got when it was new. Now have 120K miles and seems to run fine.

You might try replacing the thermostat. Hows the heater work? That will give you a clue. A stuck or defective thermostat will cause poor fuel mileage and poor heater performance. This vehicle needs a
192-195 degree thermostat to operate correctly.

2004 Ford Sportrac having problems with trans OD flashing on and off and sticking in gear?

When the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) isn't engaging or locks in engagement the light flashes a warning...The TCC solenoid may stick due to dirty transmission fluid...If the Check Engine Light
(CEL) is not lit have your transmission fluid changed...If it is lit the code is probably pointing at a defective TCC, Computer (PCM) or the clutch itself... you can take the vehicle to an auto parts store and have them read and define the trouble code for free...saailer

Why is it when weather gets below 60 degrees my transmission won't shift into overdrive til about 12 miles out, and i lose 9 mpg? No apparent reason. Need help getting computer to talk to me to tell me...

Check fluid level first. your trans filter is probably dirty and needs changing , maybe losing mpg due to trans . slipping..Autozone can check the engine codes for free

My 1996 F150 with the 300ci, 4.9liter inline 6 with auto trasns.and overdrive gets terrible gas mileage.12-13 mpg. Doesn't trip any trouble codes, ox sensors all tested good. Had the truck 3 years now....

your milage won't get much better than around 20 mpg at the best of times but you may have a partially plugged resignater or catalytic converter.you can check these with a digital thermomiter by checking temps. in and out of these, they should be close to the same.

I put a liter of transmission treatment in my trany, it would drop out of overdrive when it was hot. This seems to have solved the problem.

Your transmission fluid contain water, thats why the colour of the fluid changed to pink. And of such the clutch is slipping causing the engine to reve up before shifting - Check transmission cooler.
