Question about 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Ive flushed my cooling system. ive changed my thermostat,and all of the hoses. still when im driving and i turn the air on the engine temp gauge creeps over to hot. if i turn the air off it goes back to normal temp. the coolin fans are also working. what else is there.

Did you use an AC Delco or Stant super stat, big differance between theese 2 and other brands.

2003 chrysler town and coy try, temp gauge goes up and heater gets warm when idling, but as we drive the temp gauge goes way down and heater blows cool air. Any suggestions?


1. Engine Coolant Temperature.
If the thermostat in the cooling system is getting stuck in the open or partially open position rather than opening and closing as needed to keep the coolant at the required operating temperature then you will get the results you have described here with the coolant temp dropping as you drive. The radiator is providing optimum cooling when the car is moving and there is plenty of cold air flow through it.
I am assuming the temp gauge in the vehicle is reading correctly.

Thermostats in the cooling system do become faulty in time and it may well never have been changed (or only changed once) since the car was built and is possibly gummed up with debris. With those symptoms I would definitely change the thermostat. Make sure a full flush of the cooling system is done at the same time and refilled with fresh coolant.

2. In Car Heater.
I would not worry about the interior heating until you change the thermostat on the cooling system. However if you continue to get cold air from the heater then there will be an issue with hot coolant from the cooling system being restricted in flowing through the heater core.

No heat coming from the vents.


If it is a manual system--sounds like coolant low ie: air bubble in system. If it is ATC system, Check Codes, if no failure codes, coolant may be low--air bubble in system--most Durango's have air bleeders in system.

Why I get lukewarm heat air flows ok, and the temp gauge does not move?


First check and see if the fluid in the radiator is up where it should be. When was the last time the thermostat was changed? Could be no good.These things cause just warm air If the blower is working as it should you will have air flow but it your antifreeze is not warming up like it should it will be cool. .

More than likely sounds like your heater core is bad or clogged, easy thing to do is have it backed flushed, also you may need to burp you cooling system it may have a air pocket due to the radiator change

Hot heat at idle cool when driving


is there a chance that one of your heater hoses are clogged? or where they connect to the engine are clogged still? sounds like a clogged system. Cracked heater housing? Outside air bypassing the heater coil while driving?

You will need to bleed the air out of the system there should be a bleeder where the top hose connects to the engine

The Heater in the car works but does not get warm.


1. Check the engine thermostat (see the temp gauge). Replace thermostat if necessary.
2. Flush the cooling installation in reverse flow direction, and change the coolant.
3. Bleed correctly the cooling system.
4. Clean inside the heater core by flushing in reverse flow direction. Check for leaks. Remove and change it if necessary.
5. Check the water pump & drive belt. Replace if necessary.

Temp gauge goes up and down


first i would purchase a new radiator cap 15 lbs 16 lb capacity cost about $7..then you must let car cool completely...now check radiator coolant level.. top off if it needs it. Now install new cap..let car warm up normally and after it get to normal temp range or higher put hand on upper radiator hose..it should feel hot and when you squeeze it you should feel a slight back pressure..this will mean that the thermostat and water pump are working correctly. if not either the thermostat you purchased is defective or your pump may not be working properly.
when you use just water in an engine the boiling point becomes 212 when you add the correct amount of antifreeze, depending on where you live, the boiling point will go up to 240 degrees. Make sure you put in the correct amount of mix.50/50 will usually work well. sometimes when a gauge does max out like that it could just be trapped air. if after you checked all this out and no air is trapped in the system, i would think that you may have a bad temp sensor. let me know if this helped thanks.

hi.. your coolant temp sensor may be getting a bad reading, it also opperates as a compensator so it may effect the power of the vehicle.. check that the engine is actualy hot when it says and your car will probably run alot better if you change it anyway..

1997 ford taurus' Flushed radiator,Added( 2 ) gallons of prestone,checked hoses ,etc.... found hose on back of engine not hot like the rest,''flushed it:still no heat!!!


Did you have heat before the flush and refill? If you did, there is probably just air in the system. I'm not sure if you have a bleeder bolt for the cooling system. Is it running in the normal temp range according to the gauge? I would drive it until it reaches operating temp, watch the gauge carefully to make sure it doesn't overheat, park it, and check the level of coolant in the morning. You may just have to top it off then, and I think you should have heat.
