Question about 1995 Chevrolet Caprice Classic

I have a 95 caprice classice 5.7L V8 and it is running hot. the engine coolant is overflowing out of the coolant container and the thermostat has moved past the hot zone. What is the problem and how can I fix it?

You have a thermostat stuck shut. This causes pressure build up causing the over flow. As the heat increases the pressure increases. Also the water pump cant circulate the water also helping to add the pressure.

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

Coolant overflow tank V8


To replace the Coolant overflow tank is not difficult.
You only need a few tools to disconnect the plastic container from the mounting bracket. Just be sure to do this while the engine is off and coolant cold. Check the tubes inside and out to assure no cracking or deterioration. If found defective replace. These are inexpensive and easy to cut to length using the old tubes as guides.

Just installed new water pump for my 95 Chevy caprice classic, tested it and notice my fan is not coming on in the mean time still pouring about 2 1/2 50/50 antifreeze coolants. After about 10 or 15...


what motor do you have? is it the 4.3 or the ltz motor. did you install a new thermostat and gasket. you should have 2 fans on it. 1 is a manual fan and the other is electric

How do i put water in a 1995 chevrolet caprice classic radiator, it has a 4.3 liter v8 engine and i can't get the air out of the system.


Fill radiator and overflow tank(about half full), turn engine on without radiator cap on. Wait for thermostat to open (after car is at operating temperature). Let it run a couple more minutes, then shut car off, and refill radiator to 1 inch below top. May need to do this a couple of times to get all air out. Alternatively, you car may have a bleed valve on the thermostat housing. Just crack it open after engine is hot and see if any air comes out.

CAR OVERHEATING FIRST CHECK FOR LOW COOLANT IN THE RADIATOR COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG.IF COOLANT LEVEL IN OVERFLOW JUG LOW REFILL ADD COOLANT BACK TO THE FULL COLD MARK.PUT RADAITOR CAP ON COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG START ENGINE LET IT IDLE UNTIL IT OPERATING TEMPERATURE.MAKE SURE TOP RADIATOR HOSE GETTING HOT WHILE ENGINE WARM UP.IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE DONT GET HOT WHILE ENGINE IDLING YOUR THERMOSTAT COULD BE STUCK CLOSE CAUSING CAR TO OVERHEAT.IF TOP HOSE IS GETTING HOT.CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE FOR LEAKS.CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR CORES AND PLASTIC SIDE CONTAINERS.IF ALL IS GOOD ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE IN A LONG TRAFFIC LINE, COOLANT FANS NOT COMING ON.COULD HAVE FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR BLOWN COOLING FAN FUSE OR RELAY.COULD HAVE PCM FAULT.MAKE COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS AND WIRING NOT DAMAGE OR BROKEN.

How to install thermastat in 1500 chevy pickup 1994


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Gasoline Engines
CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or
cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant.
Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are
attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an
uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in
sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant
should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

  1. Drain the radiator until the coolant is below the thermostat level (below
    the level of the intake manifold).
  2. Remove the water outlet elbow assembly from the engine. Remove the
    thermostat from the engine, or, on the 4.8L, from inside the adapter elbow.
    To install:

  3. Clean the gasket surfaces on the water outlet elbow and the intake manifold.
    Use a new gasket when installing the elbow to the manifold.
  4. Install the new thermostat making sure the spring side is inserted into the
    engine, or, on the 4.8L, downward into the thermostat housing. Tighten the
    thermostat housing bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). On the 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L tighten
    the studs to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). On the 7.4L tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs.
    (37 Nm).
  5. Refill the cooling system. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Diesel Engines
1988-95 MODELS

  1. Remove the upper fan shroud.
  2. Drain the cooling system to a point below the thermostat.

  3. Remove the engine oil dipstick tube brace and the oil fill brace.
  4. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  5. Remove the water outlet.
  6. Remove the thermostat and gasket.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  8. Use a new gasket coated with sealer, Make sure that the spring end of the
    thermostat is in the engine. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) on 1988-91
    models and 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm) on 1992-95 models.

1996-98 MODELS

  1. Drain the cooling system to a point below the thermostat.
  2. Disconnect the upper radiator (inlet) hose from the thermostat outlet.
  3. Ufasten the thermostat housing bolt and stud, then remove the housing.
  4. Remove the gasket and the thermostat.
  5. Clean any remaining gasket from the thermostat hosing mating surfaces.

    To install:

  6. Place the thermostat into position in the housing, then install the gasket.
  7. Install the thermostat housing, the bolt and the stud. Tighten the bolt and
    stud to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
  8. Attach the upper radiator (inlet) hose to the thermostat outlet.
  9. Fill the cooling system.
  10. Start the engine with the radiator cap still removed, until the upper
    radiator hose is hot (this means the thermostat is open).
  11. With the engine idling, add coolant until the coolant level reaches the
    bottom of the filler neck.
  12. Instal the radiator cap making sure the arrows line up with the overflow
    tube and check for coolant leaks.

Where is the thermostat located in my 1994 caprice classic?


To locate the thermostat follow the upper radiator hose to the point where it enters the engine. The thermostat is located below the coolant inlet that the hose is connected to.

To change it:

You're going to lose some coolant, so have a bucket or other container, and some fresh coolant ready. Follow the upper radiator hose to the point where it's connected to the engine. The hose is clamped to a metal housing (water inlet) which is bolted to the engine. Remove the bolts (not the hose) and lift the housing to expose the thermostat (may require a little prying with a screwdriver or similar tool). Note how the old thermostat is fitted (which end is up), lift it out of the engine, and then remove all traces of gasket from the housing and the engine. Install the new thermostat and gasket, replace the bolts, add coolant as necessary, and you're done.

Before you start the job though, check the condition of your upper and lower radiator hoses. If they show any signs of wear, fraying, or fatigue, you might as well replace them too.

Why is the coolant coming out of the overflow bottle


make sure there is no coolant leak. is the radiator fan running? it should run whenever the A/C is on. if not, that will be the problem. Engine running, A/C on, see if the fan is running, if not get a long rod, broom handle ect and tap on the motor, if it starts to spin or starts running, replace the fan assy.
