Sound like the clutch is not engaging far enough to allow the synchronizer to disengage. check the clutch make sure you have good pressure not weak pressure, weak pressure pressure plate will also cause the gear not to engage or disengage. check clutch cable make sure it not strength out may need to adjust and tight the cable.

it sounds like the dog gear on the motor is stuck, try putting it in gear and rocking the car back and forth a few times, take it out of gear and try the starter again

Shift lever blocked in position D ?

Could be the park neutral switch. It senses that foot is on the brake pedal so shifter can be moved.

Have 86 mustang gt.know syncros out of 1st.been cradling along till rebuild.last nite while sitting in gear started makin grinding noise.could something have let loose inside?

your tranny is probably lunched! if you can find a used, or re-built replacement- would prob. be cheaper than new- if you can find that! if the car is high mileage, and starting to 'nickle&dime' you to poverty- then seek out a newer used vehicle to replace it! perhaps a newer 5.0!
good luck!

My shifter on my 86 ford mustang is stuck in firdt gear what coul

Hi, if your car is manual gear box and its stuck in first then it could be one of a couple of things if the gear stick is solid and wont move out of the first gear possition then the chances are that it could be either the clutch has gone or the thrust bearing on the clutch has failed these parts both come in a clutch kit.

you could try rocking the car backwards and forwards whilst moving the gearstick to see if it frees up out of first gear.

Can you start the car up with the clutch pressed down and drive the car in first gear as normal if this is the case and you can drive the car in first gear and the clutch seems fine then it could be a more serious fault inside the gearbox even broken selector in the box.

let me know the outcome then i can assist you further ok

Mustang will not start

You'll have to mark number one position on the side of the distributor. remove the cap and point the rotor to the mark that you just made and stab it into the engine. I may not go in right away, just keep trying.
