Could be numerous of thing and the list can go on, especially at times it run like a dream than other time it run horrible. Go to auto zone and have them plug it to computer for free and see if will throw a code, this way it will narrow it down instead of guessing and buying parts hoping that will fix the issue, this can be very expensive and there is no way to test the parts, beside checking the basic, plug, wires and coil. the computer will help narrow it down than guessing. then re post and one of us will try to walk you through it.

Take it to another garage, but having said that, it is difficult to troubleshoot something when the car is running fine. If it is since a service, it sounds like a faulty electrical connection somewhere.

VW GOLF MK4 2000 REG not pulling properly and feeling like its losing power

Have it scanned so you'll know which system is causing negative performance issue. 2000 models have issues with the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, temperature sensor, pre-cat converter 02 sensor and a second gear grind with it's 02J transmission to name a few.

go to the vw dealer and tell the service advisor you want them to "reset basic settings on my transmission". i used to be a tech at a vw dealer and this fixes about 90% of all transmission shifting issues. they will charge you iether .5 or 1.0 hrs labor for this although it only takes about 5 minutes.
