If your check engine light is on when the car is running, then that means there is probably a trouble code stored in your vehicles computer. With a code reader, you can find out what the code is. That will direct you to the problem. You can post your code here and we will tell you what it means.
Regarding the 'gas' smell, first check to see if your car is running 'rich'. You can rub your finger inside the tailpipe and see if there is a lot of black soot there, which would indicate its running too rich (too high of a fuel to air mixture). If this is inconclusive to you, remove the spark plugs and check if they are with black soot on them where the pin is. This will tell you how the engine is running in terms of fuel mixture. If they are black, then you have found the problem (fuel injection problem or Oxygen sensor, most likely). The trouble code might also point to this. Other than that, sometimes an exhaust leak can cause fumes to leak up into the car when running. My car had the gas smell problem and it was both a hole in the exhaust under the car and an overly rich fuel mixture. I had black soot inside the tailpipe and black sooty spark plugs and the final problem ended up being a bad oxygen sensor (located on the intake manifold), that was sending an improper signal to the vehicle's computer, thus the reason for the problem.

Check the transmission fluid... It sounds like your transmission is slipping.... Ie step on the gas with the vehicle in gear and the car doesn't move as fast as the engine sounds like it should be.... Hopefully you caught it early and just low on fluid. However. If the fluid level is at the proper height on the dipstick and smells like horribly burnt toast (not just a chemical smell) but really pronounced you may have serious transmission issues and need a pro, best of luck...

Delayed transmission shifting. Maybe a mechanical problem inside the transmission or problem with the on-board computer not communicating the correct timing through engine speed to the transmission....

Have you neglected the transmission or have you done regular services to it? Any Service Engine light? Slipping like that should show up and pop a code into it.

What you described sounds like the clutches are slipping.
Check the fluid level and smell it. Does it smell burnt and/or brown in color? That would be bad and the transmission may need a rebuild/replace.
If the level is low, top it off and hope for the best.

Hi my 02 3 series wont start, when i turn the key the front lights flash the dash lights flash and the engine sounds if its trying to start but no go

1 Listen for unusual sounds when you try to start the car. No sounds indicates a problem with the ignition. If you hear a clicking sound, the starter is faulty. If the car starts for a moment then shuts off, you may hear a knocking noise. This can be from a faulty fuel injector or the individual components of the system, such as the fuel filter, fuel pump or hoses.
2 Check the fluid levels in your BMW. Little or no fluid can cause your engine to seize up and not be able to start. It can also cause more severe engine damage if it goes on for too long. Checking your fluids can also alert you to any leaks within the engine. Some drivers have reported leaks in the cooling system that can cause overheating problems. There have also been reports of power steering hoses failing and leaking. By checking your coolant and power steering fluid, you can diagnose if they are the problem.
4 Add gas to your tank. Although the BMW 540i has a gas gauge that indicates the fuel level, in some cases the gauge may be faulty. After adding fuel, attempt to start the car again.
5 Note any smells that may be coming from the engine. When your engine was still running, you may have noticed odors, such as a burning or oil smell. This would indicate that the engine is leaking, and fluid is burning off in the engine. Some owners on Repair Pal have reported complaints with the 540i that the valve cover, intake manifold and PCV plate leak oil after 60,000 miles.

Where do I add automatic transmission fluid for a 1995 Chevy S10 Blazer?

Locate the transmission dipstick tube....on a rear wheel drive vehicle it should be near the firewall, on the passenger side of the car. On a front wheel drive vehicle it will probably be near the firewall on the drivers side of the car. You'll need a funnel with a rather small end to fit inside the dipstick tube.

Your Blazer is a rear wheel drive vehicle.

Fluid level is best and most accurately checked when vehicle has been driven and is up to normal operating temperature and parked on level ground.

With the transmission in Park, and the engine idling, pull the dipstick out of the tube, wipe it with a clean rag all the way to the bottom and re-insert into the tube (making sure it it fully seated).

Then withdraw the dipstick, taking note of the fluid level on the bottom end of the stick.

Be sure to purchase fluid properly formulated for your vehicle.

Add fluid as required, only to "Full when hot" level. Add only enough fluid to bring up to the correct level (be careful to not overfill).

Need to add tranny fluid to '99 Rodeo, but where??

CAUTION: DO NOT OVERFILL.
Overfilling will cause foaming, loss of fluid, abnormal shifting and possible damage to the transmission.
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly.
2. Check fluid level with engine running at idle.
NOTE: Be sure that transmission fluid temperature is below 30degrees C (86degreesF).
3. Move the selector lever through all gear ranges.
4. Move the selector lever to “Park”.
5. Let engine idle for 3 minutes and open the overfill screw (1).
6. Add released transmission fluid until it flows out over the overfill screw opening.
7. Let engine idle until a fluid temperature between 32C (90F) and 57C (135F) is reached, then close the overfill screw (1).
Torque: 38 Nm (3.9 kg·m/28 lb ft)
NOTE: To prevent fluid leaks, the overfill screw and oil drain screws gasket must be replaced each time these screws are removed.

CAUTION: Do not open overfill screw with engine stopped.
CAUTION: DO NOT CHECK FLUID LEVEL UNDER THESE CONDITIONS:
Immediately after driving at sustained highway speeds.
In heavy city traffic during hot weather.
If vehicle is towing a trailer.
If the vehicle has been operated under these conditions, shut the engine off and allow the vehicle to “cool” for thirty (30) minutes. After the cool down period, restart the vehicle and continue from step 2 above.

Sounds like you might have serious internal transmission problems.

As soon as you can, get someone with a code reader to plug in the vehicle and find out what the code is for the Check Engine light to come on. Might give you a better picture of what`s going on.

It could also (cross your fingers) be something more usual like a clogged transmission filter (located inside the pan), or shift solenoid.

By the way, have you checked the level, look & smell of your transmission fluid?

Level should be checked with the vehicle running, after passing it in all gear ranges on the shifter, and putting it back in park (Check it on "cold" or "hot" level depending on if it`s been driving for a while or not).

As for look and smell, it should be reddish and not smell burnt. Hard to describe the smell of burnt transmission fluid, but normal fluid does not smell too strongly, kind of sweet. Burnt oil is usually black and has a strong odor. If the oil is burnt you have internal damage to the transmission.

One piece of advice I give you is get it fixed as soon as possible because if you don`t already have serious internal transmission problems, the longer you wait, the more chances you have of getting some, to the point of the vehicle just refusing to move. And believe me, speaking from experience, the transition point from the symptoms you describe to total refusal to move and the need for a tow/transmission rebuild is not that long usually.
