Question about 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX

1 Answer

Pings under heavy acceleration, has gotten worse over time. It used to happen only on hot summer days. High test fuel makes no difference. I suspect injectors at 97,000 miles. I don't think there is a knock sensor on this 4.6 and timing is out of my control. Plugs are rather new. plug wires & O2's original.

Top engine cleaner and EGR check seems to zero right there. Some of that EGR system is way down in there where I fear to tread, but I should be able to clean or replace the screen. I had the vacuum port cleaning done on my 92 3.8 so I'm familiar with that. The tech said Chevies tolerated the treatment quite well but Fords not so much.
I will try this out, thanks mic0707.

There is a product out there that is called top engine cleaner that you run thru a SMALL vacuum port I used it all the time for this problem at the GM dealerships I worked at.You could also make sure your EGR system is not blocked and is working properlly.

First thing to try would be different fuel. Use a fuel stabilizer and fill with good gas. see if that helps. Also, check the fuel pressure.

I have a 98 ranger 3.0 Liter with 134,000 This thing pings likes crazy going up any slight upgrade ( mostly highways ). Tried 93 Oct and fuel injector cleaners, but still pings.Does not do it as much now...

Have you checked the ignition timing and that the automatic timing advance is working and set to give the correctly advance at the specified engine speeds. The other thing could be a carbon build-up in the combustion chambers which starts to glow when it is hot and cause the fuel mixture to ignite too early. You could also have this effect if the engine is running below its torque range (about 2500 rpm) when under load.

I have an 04 Pontiac Grand Prix with 63,000 miles. My problem is pinging when i accelerate. I have changed fuel from 87-89 & now i'm using 93. The pinging is less with the 93 but still there. If i only...

It sounds like your timing is out. Too far BTDC. If you do not know the timing - advance it slightly and try it until it stops pinging. If there is a hill in your area - drive up it with the throttle well opened to se if it pings. Try this before adjusting timing to get a base line to see if it improves with timing adjustments.

94 Buick Regal 3.8. Pings under load. All

Remove and inspect the spark plugs for heavy deposits or glazed-looking interior insulators. Make sure the plugs are the proper type for this engine. Heavy carbon build-up in the cylinder heads will cause pinging. If the ignition system is too advanced, it will also cause problems. Try a different brand of fuel. High engine temperatures can do the same (caused by poor cooling system or lean fuel/air mixture). If the check engine light is on, take the car to Autozone or a similar business that offers a free scan of the computer. This may provide additional clues. Hope some of this helps!

Got fault code p0335. Replaced ckp sensor. Now tach goes crazy while accelerating and it misses worse and pings terribly. Replaced plugs, cap and rotor over the summer.

Code P0355 i would take your crankshaft position sensor out and look at the end of it, It's probably hitting on the reflector wheel. If it has any scuffs or white marks on the crankshaft position sensor it needs to be shimmed with a 0.5mm thick shim. GM part number 12565102.
While your looking at the sensor take a quick look at the front cover and make sure it's not damaged.

Good luck and merry Xmass

Have your timing checked.  Higher octane fuel will sometimes help.
