Firing order is 1 2 3 4 5 6. does it run smooth?? you cant change it even if you want to....Number 6 cylinder coil is longer than the others. Check fuel pressure, ck scan data. there isnt much you can do without a scanner. Was timing belt been done before you bought it?? maybe the cam timing is off???

Your description sounds more like a torque converter clutch problem. It would explain the poor mileage, having to floor it to go. I suggest having the transmission scanned, looking at the slip speed of the torque converter clutch.

Poor fuel milage

try changing fuel filter and making sure tire pressure is correct keep your car clean so air can flow freely and try an oil change all these factor into good gas mileage and you could try adding new plug wires to your tune up

What grade of fuel are you using? There are many conditions that effect gas mileage. The way a vehicle is driven, is it shifting correctly, flooring it to get up to speed from dead stop also known as Jack Rabbit starts, driving with the defroster on when it isn't needed or the setting just above that can be used. Back in the 90's most car manufacturers made a change to their heating.cooling system that caused the AC compressor to kick in when the selector was set to defrost. This puts drag on teh motor and decreases gas mileage. Build up on valves and low compression in the firing cylinders will cause you to lose gas mileage as well. Do a compression check on the motor to make sure you don't have abnormally high compression or low compression on cylinders and use a bottle of gas treatment in your fuel to clean some of the carbon build up from injectors and valves. Also start using the Mid grade fuel. Not the High Octane in your area. In Texas we typically have 3 choices 87, 89 and 93 to choose from. Low grade is enough to run the vehicle but performance is low as well as mileage. I use the 89 octane for better performance and better mileage. The High Octane or 93 isn't really good as it leads to higher carbon build up on the valves. Also check your oil often and make sure your changing it every 4000 miles at the longest. All of this along with making sure you change the Air Filter every 5000 miles will increase your mileage.

When you do a tune up you should replace the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, airfilter, and fuel filter, this will insure that you get the best mileage. Also have the coil checked, for proper resistance. If it starts to get weak it will throw a lower than normal voltage spark. You can not look at spark plug wires and tell if they are good, this can only be done with an ohm meter. The resistance should be 3000 to 6000 ohms per foot of wire. One other note is if your car feels sluggish or lacks power is to check the catalitic converter. These clog up and stop air flow thru the engine. There are many many things on cars that will result in poor gas mileage. A good mechanic doesn't go by just the codes a car spits out, they have to read the numbers and diagnose what is wrong.

Buick regal 92 3.8L Horrible fuel mileage

Sounds like you might have an oxygen sensor problem. Your catalytic converter(s) maybe defective or dirty. That in turn can dirty up the oxygen sensor. A defective oxygen sensor will send faulty info to the computer, interpreting the fumes as cold (even when the engine warms up). That causes the computer to adjust the fuel mixture to very rich, giving you poor gas mileage and the fuel smell. Hope it helps.

I would start with getting the right firing order you can look up the spec online at autzone on there site they always have diagrams than start by checking and making sure that your getting fuel either a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump that is starting to go bad. Make sure you only have 1 fuel pump some cars have 2 if you have to chances are the one inside the gas tank is the one that 99% of time goes bad but check both for fuel coming out of them to be sure. To me it sounds like your ignition componenets need to be checked and make sure your confident on your firing order than start diagnosing .

If the coolant temperature sensor is sending false low temperature readings to the computer, it could cause the computer to send too much fuel through the injectors causing rough running, spark plug fouling, and poor gas mileage. Replace the sensor, clean or replace the plugs, and see if it runs better.

what kind of exhaust do you got, the converter actually may help get better mileage. scan egr for errors in emmisions, get the timing checked mabe running rich, check pcv valves, test knock sensor, 02 sensor( scan might not pick up) lemme know how it goes
