You can't fix the muffler you would have to replace it.

  • donsauto Sep 24, 2009

Well I don't know where you are located, but I am in Ontario and here it would likely cost between $150-200 from an aftermarket supplier like Carquest, Napa or Canadian Tire. But that is just a ball park you may find it cheaper somewhere.

Why is there muffler noise?

Could be a loose element in the muffler that vibrates at certain engine RPM. Or a small hole in the muffler. Sometimes the problem is as simple as a loose clamp, either a clamp that holds the muffler to the chassis or a clamp that joins two exhaust pipes. A loose clamp can allow the muffler or pipe to vibrate against the frame. Clamps are cheap - a lot cheaper than a new muffler or exhaust system.

My 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee loses power going it uphill and when I accelorate it sputters and slows down.

it sounds like you may have a clogged catylic convertor in your exhaust system. after the car has run for a while look at the convertor under the car sometimes they will get red from the heat. or even the exhaust manifold could be red. this just happened to my suv. to confirm that it was my convertors I drilled a 3/8 in hole in the exhaust before the convertors. then I test drove the car going up a steep hill and the car ran fine no more lack of power and the engine ran smooth. if this is not the problem and you drilled a hole in the exhaust pipe then just go to a muffler shop and they will weld the hole closed for a few dollars. good luck

1997 honda accord loud buzz near engine when accelerator pressed?

Sounds like either: 1) A exhaust heatshield is loose. They're simply thin metal guards around your muffler/CATS. If you find one loose, remove it or have it welded back on. 2) Broken motor mount. This is serious and requires pulling the engine from the car. If a motor mount is broken, the engine wont sit right and cause multiple vibrations. Hope this helped!

Sounds like a hole in the muffler but coming from front end

Probably your exhaust manifold has a hole. You can use muffler repair putty on it or have it replaced.

How at fix a sqeaky muffler

if you stilll have heat sheilds around the exhaust system then check then for looseness as these will cause a squeak or rattle noise.you can try to tighten the sheilds or remove them.their purpose is to help keep the exhaust cool.if its a small pin hole in the exhaust it can cause a sound like you have.you will have to find the hole and if the system is not rotted weld the hole closed.if the system is no good then replace the bad part.if the noise is from the inside the muffler you can try to dent the muffler were you here the noise to try to stop it or just replace the muffler.

When i accelerate it sounds like a hole in my muffler, but when I maintain a constant speed it goes away, what can it be?

It could be a small hole or the baffles are loose in the muffler itself. You can either check this out yourself by jacking the vehicle up and starting it and see where the noise is coming from or have it looked at at a repair shop.Make sure they show you the problem if they find one.Don`t just take they`er word.Hope this helps.Good luck.

96 grande cherokee back fires and blows hole in muffler, the muffler is bulked up in center.did the cat converter cause this or did the muffler stop up from lack of air flow .

Sounds like you have a ignition timing issue or it is possible your engine is running extremely rich and a partially plugged muffler and after the fuel vapors accumulate in the exhaust system then you get an explosion causing your muffler to expand. However I would first look at ignition timing and if that checks out move on to exhaust system or emissions systems.

Vehicle turns over and shuts right off

You could have a cloged fuel fillter, or a bad fuel sending unit and that thing out of your tail pipe could be a part of your Cat-Converter.
Before your start that blazer keep your door open and see if your ca hear a buzzing noise under you when you turn the key's to accessory before you start it. If you can the pump may still be good and change the fuel filter first.
The other thing is that if your Cat-Converter is cloged up it would also keep your engine from running. I hope it's just a simple fuel filter change. Good luck

Sounds like a hole in the muffler but, upfront when I first start loud then when I push on the excellerator and it gets loud I made an apt. to have it looked at and the mechanic told me that it could be...

your going to have to be more specific but there is a such thing as a flex pipe its rite under where the driver seat is under the car it connects to the exhaust they usually go back and the car gets really noisy if you look under the car they look like a pipe thats weaved metal like a basket but its a flex pipe.
