Voltage gauge is reading lower than it should

I have had the battery replaced and it tests good. My alternator had went out a couple months ago and was replaced with a new alternaror (not a reman). With the loads on the voltage reads at 14.25V even when the gauge is showing low. All of the grounds appear to be good and the dash and headlight bulbs are not dim like when the altrernator went out. If any one has any ideas for checking something else that would be great.

Make sure the connections at the alternator and battery are all clean and tight. This may sound dumb as to the fact that they are new but that sounds like where the problem is, mremember dirt or a loose connection can cause false readings going to the meter. Sometimes all it takes is to loosen and retighten the wires (sounds wierd but this does work). Give this a try and see if your problem is solved, the problem should be in this area if the gauge worked properly before. Also make sure all wires were reconnected.

While its running take your ground wire(black)off your battery if it stays running your alternator is functioning and my guesd is your belt is loose or you have a faulty gauge if its reading close to 14 volts its not reading low that's normal

Alt gauge reads low

This sounds like the alt is not charging, but a eak battery will also cause this condition, what you can do is have the charging system tested. if you have a volt meter you can connect it to the battery with engine running and acc off you should have 13.5-15 volts, this is a good alternator, then turn on all acc and check it, it may have a low reading but should atleast go to 13volts and then when you rev it up it should go to 13.5 - 14.7. if the readings are low replace alternator.

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4 month old battery.A couple of the power door locks quit working a while back and my husband went out a couple of days ago and sprayed them with WD 40 but they...

check the voltage on the battery with a volt meter, it should be around 12.6 to 13 volts, if not charge battery with a charger, after charge try to start vehicle, if the vehicle starts use your volt meter at the battery again, the voltage should be around 14 to 14.5 any lower and the battery isn't being charged and the alternator should be checked and or replaced to solve the problem..

1985 dodge powerwagon, lights went dim driving home now wont start, just replaced battery 6 months ago. starter clicked at first then nothing.

The alternator may not be charging the battery. Jump start it, and use a volt meter at the battery, red lead to positive and black to neg. The meter should read between 13 and almost 15 volts, any lower than 13 volts, the alternator is no good. (this is done with vehicle running).

98 expedition battery light comes on with increase of rpm

There may be no loss of voltage, but is there a surge of voltage?

As for the battery itself when tested, it should read 12-12.5Volts across the
leads when the car is off. When the car is running, the battery should be reading 13-14Volts across the leads, anything lower means the alternator is not charging your battery, anything higher means the alternator is over charging and damaging your battery.

Another cause for the battery light could be your ECU has detected an error

Put a temporary voltmeter @ the battery....see what IT reads...If your charging system reads between 12.8 and 14.2 volts, with all of your acc's. on (headlites, wipers etc.) you don't need to drive into a boulder. Just get a new voltage gauge!!!!!!!
